Rajendra Rai stakes claim to Province 1 CM

As the second Chief Minister (CM) of Province 1 Bhim Acharya resigned following only 68 days in office, a coalition of opposition parties in Province 1 collected signatures of 50 provincial assembly members to elect the next chief minister of the Province on Monday afternoon.   It may be noted that 47 signatures are enough for one to be elected as the chief minister from the 92-member strong  provincial assembly.  A total of 59 lawmakers belonging to Nepali Congress (NA), CPN (Maoist Center), CPN (Unified Socialist), Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP)  and Federal Democratic Forum submitted their signatures to the Province Chief Somnath Adhikari 'Pyasi'.   Among the signatories are 21 PA members of Nepali Congress, 15 of CPN (Maoist Center), 10 of CPN (Unified Socialist), three of JSP and one PA member from Federal Democratic Forum.  After the resignation of CM Acharya, Province 1 Chief Pyasi has set a deadline until 1:00 pm Tuesday to submit claims to the post of the new Chief Minister.  If everything goes as planned, Rajendra Rai is likely to become the new CM of Province. 1 on Tuesday.  Rai is the Parliamentary Party leader of CPN (Unified Socialist), the third largest party of the five-party coalition.  Rai was elected PA member from Bhojpur. He switched to CPN (Unified Socialist) from CPN (UML) after the party was officially registered at the Election Commission on 25 August. The CPN (US) was formed under the leadership of former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, after breaking away from the CPN-UML.

Province 1: CM Acharya loses majority as 10 UML lawmakers join CPN (US)

BIRATNAGAR: The Chief Minister (CM) of Province 1, Bhim Acharya has lost the majority in the provincial assembly as 11 lawmakers of the CPN-UML joined the newly formed CPM (Unified Socialist). Acharya, who was said to be an ally of the then senior leader of UML, Madhav Kumar Nepal,  was appointed the CM of the province after Sher Dhan Rai, the outgoing CM, resigned from his post. However, due to the split in the UML, Acharya is very much likely to lose his majority in the provincial assembly. Of 92 members in the provincial assembly, 51 were members of CPN-UML before the party split. But, as UML lawmakers are preparing to officially join the Madhav Kumar Nepal-led CPN (Unified Socialist), the size of the UML in the assembly is likely to decline. The Election Commission (EC) has extended the deadline for those people’s representatives of local units and provinces of UML and Janata Samajbadi Party to join the new parties by 5 PM, September 7, next month. Ten lawmakers of UML in Province 1 have so far joined the CPN (US), meaning CM Acharya lost the majority in the assembly Meanwhile, the chief minister is also preparing to take a vote of confidence later as the UML split. Acharya needs to garner the support of at least 47 lawmakers to win a trust vote.

UML to hold its PP meeting to change CM of Province 1

KATHMANDU, August 26: As the main opposition party, CPN-UML has split, the chief minister of Province 1, Sher Dhan Rai has lost majority in the Provincial Assembly. Following this political development, CPN-UML has called it’s parliamentary party (PP) meeting. The meeting has begun preparation to elect Bhim Acharya as a parliamentary party leader. As the party entrusts Acharya as a leader of the parliamentary party, Rai is likely to resign from his post. The party will then recommend the chief of the province to appoint Acharya in the post of CM of Province 1. Acharya will then have to take a trust vote within a month. Only if four lawmakers of the party join CPN (Unified Socialist), Acharya is certain to fail to garner majority votes.
