India to buy additional 325 MW of electricity from Nepal

KATHMANDU, April 6: Nepal has been granted permission to export an additional 325 Megawatt (MW) of electricity to India. The Central Electricity Authority of India granted permission to the Nepal Electricity Authority to export 325 MW additional electricity. Earlier, Nepal had permission to export only 39 MW of electricity to the Indian Energy Exchange. With this new decision in effect, Nepal will now be allowed to export 364 MW of electricity. Nepal and India had signed various agreements during a recent visit of Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba to India. Those agreements are coming under implementation gradually, according to the Ministry of Energy, Water Resource and Irrigation.

According to Suresh Bhattarai, spokesperson for the Nepal Electricity Authority, Nepal has formally begun supplying electricity to India from today. “Excess electricity is being exported to India”, he further added. Nepal electricity production has reached 1,300 Megawatt currently following the beginning of pre-monsoon. The authority is currently exporting 37.7 Megawatt of electricity produced from Trishuli and Devighat Hydropower Projects.
