Liquor sale, consumption banned ahead of local polls

KATHMANDU, May 10: District Administration Offices in all three districts in the Kathmandu Valley have decided to ban the supply and consumption of alcoholic products in view of the May 13 local level elections.  Issuing a notice separately today, the respective DAO informs that the decision shall come into effect from 12:00 midnight today and continue till May 13.  Lalitpur's chief district officer Ghanshyam Upadhyay confirmed that the office has issued a public notice about the prohibition of sale and consumption of alcohol. Security agencies at all six local levels in the district have directed the subordinate security mechanism to ensure the effective enforcement of the decision.    According to Bhaktapur CDO Rudradevi Sharma, violation of the order is punishable and the sale and consumption of alcohol is prohibited near the vote counting venues until the counting gets over. Likewise, the Kathmandu DAO said it will not allow the sale and use of alcohol from today midnight to May 13.

UML accuse ruling alliance of rigging local polls in Madhesh Province

KATHMANDU, May 18: The main opposition party, CPN-UML, has accused the ruling alliance-led by the Nepali Congress of rigging the local level polls in Madhesh Province. As the vote count of recently held local polls are underway and results are arriving gradually, the ruling Nepali Congress seems in a strong position winning the highest number of local units so far. The main opposition party, UML, is trailing behind, followed by the CPN (Maoist Center). Organizing a press conference at Janakpurdham, Raghubir Mahaseth, Provincial Incharge of UML, accused the ruling alliance of rigging the local polls in collaboration with election officials at Madhesh Province. Mahaseth also accused the Nepali Congress and ruling alliance of misusing the authorities of security personnel and election officials as per their interests. “The Nepali Congress attacked more than a dozen polling centers, canceled voting and hijacked ballot boxes and fake votes were casted in collaboration of election officers deployed in the area,” he added. All about local polls

KATHMANDU, May 13: Voting to elect new people’s representatives in all the 753 local units is currently underway across the country. The voting kicked off at 7 AM and is scheduled to continue till 5 PM today in 21,955 polling centers at 10,756 polling stations across the country.  As many as 17,733,723 voters will cast their votes to elect 35,221 representatives including 390 who were elected unopposed across the country. What is the number of candidates? As many as 145,011 candidates are contesting in the local polls across the country. Of them, 89,313 are males and 55,698 are females. Of the 145,011 candidates vying for the various posts, only 35,221 candidates will be elected at the end. How many political parties are participating in the election? As many as 79 political parties were registered at the Election Commission. However, 14 of these parties did not file their nominations for the election. With this, as many as 65 political parties are participating in the polls. More than 35,000 local representatives to be elected As many as 35,000 local representatives will be elected in the ongoing local level polls. Of them, 753 will be elected as mayor and chairperson, 753 as deputy mayors and vice chairperson, 6,743 ward chairpersons, 6,743 female members, 6,743 Dalit female members and 13,486 ward members. More than 100,000 officials and 260,000 security personnel mobilized The government has deployed as many as 109,088 officials and 260,000 security personnel across the country for the local level polls. Besides, 65,865 volunteers are also contributing to the polls.

All set for the local polls: Election Commission

KATHMANDU, May 12: The Election Commission (EC) has maintained that all preparations for the local polls are completed. The country is going for local polls on May 13. Surya Prasad Aryal, spokesperson for the poll body organizing a press conference, maintained that all sorts of preparations for the local polls have been completed. Polling booths have been set up, ballot papers are ready as the country will elect new local governments across the country on Friday.

SC postpones hearing of writ petition filed demanding suspension of local polls

KATHMANDU, April 11: The Supreme Court (SC) postponed the hearing of a writ petition filed demanding suspension of the upcoming local level polls. The local polls are scheduled for May 13. Stating that the government has decided to go for local polls before expiry of tenures of local representatives, Chairman of Mainapur Rural Municipality, Bijay Kumar Chaurasiya, had filed a writ petition at the apex court. Earlier, a single bench of Justice Prakash Man Singh had issued a show cause notice on the case. The court was scheduled to refuse or give an interim order on the case today. With this, the hearing on the case now remains uncertain.
