UML and Loktantrik Samajbadi Party to forge an electoral alliance for upcoming polls

KATHMANDU, Sept 24: CPN-UML and Loktantrik Samajbadi Party Nepal have decided to forge an electoral alliance for the upcoming polls of the federal and provincial level. A committee has also been formed accordingly. The two parties had forged a similar alliance during the local polls as well.

Nepal's ruling alliance fails to win majority of seats in general election

KATHMANDU, Dec. 7: The ruling alliance in Nepal has failed to win a majority of votes to form a new government on its own as general election results were unveiled on Tuesday night. The Nepali Congress, which leads the ruling alliance, has emerged as the largest party in the House of Representatives by securing 89 seats, followed by the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist), the main opposition, with 78 seats. The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Center), a ruling partner, comes third with 32 seats. The ruling Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Socialist) becomes the seventh largest party with 10 seats, while the ruling Loktantrik Samajbadi Party takes four seats, and the Rastriya Janamorcha, which formed an electoral alliance with the four ruling parties in the Nov. 20 general elections for the House of Representatives and seven provincial assemblies, has one seat. In total, the ruling alliance has garnered 136 seats in the 275-strong House of Representatives, two seats shy of a majority needed to form a new government on its own. Nepal has adopted a mixed electoral system, in which 60 percent of representatives to the lower house and provincial assemblies are elected through the fast-past-the-post voting system, while the remaining 40 percent are filled through the proportional representation system. "We have completed the vote count and seat allocation. We will write to the parties on Wednesday to name their lawmakers under the proportional representation," Shaligram Sharma Poudel, spokesperson of the Election Commission, told Xinhua. As many as 12 parties have made their way to the lower house this time, with the newly-formed Rastriya Swatantra Party bagging 20 seats to become the fourth largest.

Local Polls 2022: Ruling alliance Vs UML’s seven party electoral alliance

KATHMANDU, April 18: As the local level election is on our doorsteps, both the ruling alliance and the main opposition party are busy forging an electoral alliance. Earlier, the CPN-UML had been maintaining that the party would contest in the election against the ruling alliance solely. However, in recent days, UML seems busy building alliances with other small parties. As the ruling Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Center), CPN (Unified Socialist), Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) and Rastriya Janamorcha Party have announced an electoral alliance in the upcoming local election, the main opposition party, UML, Kamal Thapa-led Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal, Ek Nath Dhakal-led Pariwar Dal, Mahantha Thakur-led Loktantrik Samajbadi Party, CK Raut-led Janamath Party, Netra Bikram Chand-led Communist Party of Nepal, Narayanman Bijukchhe-led Nepal Workers' and Peasants' Party, Hridayesh Tripathi-led Janata Pragatisheel Party and a fraction of Nepali Congress-led by Govinda Raj Joshi are preparing to forge a similar alliance, according to UML leaders. Kamal Thapa-led Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal, Ek Nath Dhakal-led Pariwar Dal have already decided to contest in the upcoming local polls using UML’s election symbol. Likewise, the UML is all set to offer a similar choice to the Netra Bikram Chand-led Communist Party of Nepal. KP Oli-led UML and Kamal Thapa-led Rastriya Prajatantra Party Nepal have already agreed on forging an electoral alliance at Makwanpur, Chitwan, Kaski, Mahottari and Parsa districts. Likewise, UML is preparing to forge a similar alliance with the Mahantha Thakur-led Loktantrik Samajbadi Party in districts of Madhesh Province and a few districts of Lumbini Province. Similarly, UML and the Netra Bikram Chand-led Communist Party of Nepal are joining hands in some districts of Sudur Paschim Province, Lumbini Province and Karnali Province. Also, the party is looking forward to an alliance with Narayanman Bijukchhe-led Nepal Workers' and Peasants' Party in Karnali Province and in Tanahu with a fraction of Nepali Congress-led by Govinda Raj Joshi.
