CJ Rana asks if PM can  refrain from taking trust vote from parliament

KATHMANDU, June 29: Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana asked whether Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli himself could declare that he would not take a vote of confidence from parliament as he was appointed as Article 76 (3) of the constitution.  During the ongoing hearing at the Constitutional Bench on Tuesday, Chief Justice Rana asked the Deputy Attorney General Padam Prasad Pandey whether PM can refrain from taking the trust vote as stated in Article 76 (4).  PM Oli had recommended to President Bidya Devi Bhandari to initiate the process of new government formation as per Article 76 (5) citing he did not have convincing political ground to win a confidence motion. In response to CJ Rana’s question, Deputy Attorney General Pandey said that the constitution does not have a provision that requires the prime minister to table a proposal at parliament that he does not want to go for a floor test. “As long as he [PM Oli] surrendered citing he could not win parliament’s confidence, he was not required to go for a floor test.”

PM Oli tries to justify House dissolution as he addresses nation on Friday

KATHMANDU, May 28: At a time when the Constitutional Bench is hearing on the 30 writ petitions registered against the dissolution of the House of Representatives (HoR), Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Friday made an attempt to justify the dissolution citing it as a constitutional process.  PM Oli, who addressed the nation on Friday afternoon from his Singh Durbar-based office, accused the opposition alliance including a faction of the ruling party CPN-UML of attempting to use parliament to fulfill the vested interests and frustrations of a limited number of people.  He remarked that the lower house of parliament could not complete its full tenure of five years due to the opposition parties despite his ‘constant efforts to save it’.  He also took time to argue that the parliament was dissolved as per the constitutional provisions as the parties failed to form an alternative government as per the Article 76 (5) of the Constitution of Nepal.  ‘Vaccines for all’ On the occasion, Oli also  promised vaccines against COVID-19 to all eligible citizens adding that vaccines would be administered to those waiting for the booster dose and for others as well.  Click here to read in detail.

Cabinet recommends prorogation of House session, PM Oli calls on Prez Bhandari

KATHMANDU, May 10: The government has recommended to President Bidya Devi Bhandari to prorogue the special session of the House of Representatives (HoR).  A Cabinet meeting held on Monday evening decided to recommend the prorogation of House session effective  Monday midnight. Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota, however, has called the next meeting of parliament for May 13 (Thursday).  The session was summoned for 1 PM on Monday where the parliamentarians voted on Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s trust motion. PM Oli, however, lost the motion. He secured only 93 votes, which fell short of 43 votes to win the confidence of parliament.  Meanwhile, Prime Minister Oli has reached Sheetal Niwas, official residence of President Bidya Devi Bhandari to visit the latter shortly after the Cabinet meeting.

PM Oli loses trust vote in parliament

KATHMANDU, May 10: Prime Minister KP Oli has failed to win a confidence motion in the House of Representatives.  During the vote held on the trust motion on Monday, Prime Minister Oli garnered only 93 votes, which fell short of 43 votes to secure the required majority votes of at least 146 votes.  Similarly, a total of 124 lawmakers voted against him while 15 other  lawmakers opted to remain neutral during Monday’s voting process. As many as 27 lawmakers were absent.

KATHMANDU, May 10: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has called a meeting of Council of Ministers for 5 PM on Monday.  According to a minister, the agenda of the meeting, however, has not been disclosed yet.  The meeting has been taken with much interest as PM Oli is seeking a vote of confidence from parliament’s special session on Monday itself.

The CPN (UML) Chair and Prime Minister has, in his twitter post this morning, drawn the attention of all the parliamentarians that internal disagreements or dissatisfactions, if any, could be resolved through mutual discussions and that it would not be appropriate to go for any improper decision in a hurry in such a situation.  "Come, let's sit together and discuss if there are any problems, and resolve them," PM Oli has tweeted.

UML issues whip to its lawmakers to vote for PM Oli tomorrow

KATHMANDU, May 9: The ruling CPN-UML has issued a whip to its lawmakers to vote in favor of Prime Minister and party Chairman KP Sharma Oli as the latter is seeking a vote of confidence at the 275-member House of Representatives (HoR) on Monday.  Chief Whip of the party, Bishal Bhattarai, on Sunday, issued the whip asking the lawmakers to cast their votes in favor of PM Oli. The whip was issued as per the Political Party Act-2017 and UML’s Parliamentary Party Statue-2021, according to  Bhattarai.  PM Oli is scheduled to seek parliament’s trust at a special meeting of parliament on Monday.

KATHMANDU, April 17: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has called an all-party meeting at his official residence in Balutwatar, Kathmandu on Saturday. The meeting is scheduled to hold at 11 AM, according to Surya Thapa, a press aide to PM Oli. Thapa added that the meeting is expected to receive suggestions from the parties amid the onset of the second wave of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).  “Meeting will also dwell on the current political issues,” Thapa told Ratopati. Senior leaders of the political parties -- CPN-UML, Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Center), Janta Samajbadi Party, Rastriya Janamorcha and Nepal Peasants Workers Party-- that represent in the federal parliament are invited in the meeting.
