President Bidyadevi Bhandari has designated Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba to assume the portfolio of the Ministry of Defense as well.  The designation was made on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers, after Defense Minister Dr Minendra Rijal resigned from the post, in accordance with Article 77 of the Constitution.  Dr Rijal tendered his resignation on moral grounds after losing the election he contested for the post of General Secretary of the ruling Nepali Congress party in14th general convention of the party.

Vote count for NC’s General Secretary begins

KATHMANDU, December 16: The vote count for the post of the General Secretary of the ruling Nepali Congress (NC) in the 14th General Convention of the party has begun from 10:20 AM on Thursday. As per the party statute, voting for the posts of two general secretaries were held earlier on Monday. According to Sita Ram KC, a member of the central election committee of the party, the vote count began at10:209 AM this morning and the results will be out by next six hours.  Leaders Gagan Thapa, Dr Prakashman Singh, Pradip Poudel, Dr Minendra Rijal, Dr Rajaram Karki and Biswaprakash Sharma are vying for the post. As many as 4,743 delegates cast their votes on Monday to elect 13 office bearers and 121 central members. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has already been elected the President of the party for the second time. Likewise, Purna Bahadur Khadka and Dhanraj Gurung have been elected the Vice Presidents of the party. The 13 office bearers of the party includes one President, two Vice Presidents, two general secretaries and eight deputy general secretaries.

As many as 4,743 delegates cast their votes on Monday to elect 13 office bearers and 134 central members. Rival faction preparing to field Poudel for NC Prez

KATHMANDU, December 10: The rival faction is currently under discussion at Bohoratar in Kathmandu to field senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel as their candidate for the post of party's President in the 14th General Convention of the party. Despite multiple meetings between aspirants of the party's president, Poudel, Prakash Man Singh and Shekhar Koirala, the faction failed to hammer out the consensus and select a common candidate against incumbent President Sher Bahadur Deuba. Leaders including Minendra Rijal, Mahesh Acharya, Gagan Thapa, Bal Bahadur KC. Arjun Narasingh KC are currently at Bohoratar at the residence of Poudel to field Poudel as a candidate for the post of party's president. According to a leader close to the Poudel-faction of the party, a central committee meeting of the faction has decided to field Poudel as their candidate against PM Deuba in the convention. However, both Singh and Koirala have remained adamant in their decision to file their candidacy for the post of the party's president so far.
