Rijal resigns as Defence Minister following loss in party’s general secretary election

KATHMANDU: Dr Minendra Rijal, who suffered a loss for the general secretary post of the ruling Nepali Congress (NC), has resigned as the Minister of Finance.  Rijal handed over his resignation letter to Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba at the Office of Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar on Thursday.  Shortly after the party’s election committee began releasing preliminary vote count  Rijal contested the election for two general secretarial positions from the Shekhar Koirala panel. Of the 4,682 votes cast, he won only 809 votes.  According to the final vote tally, Gagan Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma emerged victorious as the general secretaries.

KATHMANDU, Nov 28: More than 60 former Members of Parliaments (MP) who contested in the general election held earlier on November 20 suffered defeat, thereby staying out of the legislative body.  Those defeated also include party chair, vice-chair, general secretary, former chief minister of the province and other top leaders.  In the elections, former Prime Minister and senior leader of CPN (Unified Socialist) Jhala Nath Khanal, Chairman of Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal Upendra Yadav, senior leader of Loktantrik Samajwadi Party Rajendra Mahato, CPN (UML) senior-vice chairman Ishwar Pokharel, vice-chairman Surendra Pandey, general secretary Shanker Pokharel, assistant general secretary Pradip Kumar Gyawali got defeated. Likewise, general secretary of CPN (Maoist Centre) Dev Prasad Gurung, assistant general secretary duo Giriraj Mani Pokharel and Pampha Bhusal also faced defeat while former chief minister of Province No. 1 and UML leader Sher Dhan Rai is one among other leaders staying out of the legislative body.   Former speaker of House of Representatives Onsari Gharti, former deputy speaker Pushpa Bhsual, vice-chairperson of Rastriya Janamorcha Durga Poudel, Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand, NC assistant general secretary Uma Kanta Chaudhary and other leaders also could not make to the HoR.  The other former MPs witnessing defeat in this poll include Matrika Prasad Yadav, Mohammad Istiyak Rayi, Yagya Raj Sunuwar, Rajendra Prasad Gautam, Rajendra Prasad Shrestha, Ram Kumari Jhakri, Hridayesh Tripathi and Rambir Manandhar.   Likewise, this election remained a tough nut to crack for the politicians like Laxman Lal Karn, Lal Babu Pandit, Sujata Koirala, Lekhraj Bhatta, Bijaya Kumar Gachchhadar, Bina Magar, Birodh Khatiwada, Som Prasad Pandey, Sher Bahadur Tamang, Bijaya Subba, Bishal Bhattarai, Surya Prasad Pathak and Komal Oli.

The party unveiled its election manifesto amid an event at the party headquarters this morning. The elections of the federal and provincial levels are scheduled for November 20 next month. The 41 member committee led by Bishwa Prakash Sharma, the general secretary of the party, prepared the manifesto.

Thapa elected NC general secretary, Sharma closer to victory

KATHMANDU: With 800 and a few votes remaining to be counted, Gagan Thapa has been elected as the general secretary of the ruling Nepali Congress (NC).  Leading in the vote count, which is being held at the Sanepa-based party head office, Thapa garnered 2,518 votes. Of the 4,679 votes cast in Monday's election, as many as 3,867 votes have so far been counted. Thapa’s nearest contender Bishwo Prakash Sharma has so far won 1,590 votes followed by Prakash Sharan Mahat’s 1,296. Dr Poudel declares candidacy for NRNA’s general secretary

KATHMANDU, September 8: Aspiring candidates for leadership have stepped up their preparation in view of the election of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA0 – the largest and significant umbrella organization of Nepali immigrants and Diaspora – scheduled for coming October 23-25.  Candidates have declared their candidacies for different positions and also ramped up their electoral campaigns ahead of the 10th general convention scheduled to take place next month.  In this connection, former President of NRNA US Chapter Dr Keshab Poudel is making necessary preparation to file candidacy for the post of general-secretary of NRNA. The general-secretary is an important portfolio in NRNA. The US is the country having highest number of NRNA delegates, it is informed.  Mostly popular and mild in nature, Dr Poudel said he is declaring his candidacy this time for the post of general-secretary for the institutional development of the global organization. He told RSS that he is vying for the post to materialize the agenda of developing NRNA a systematic and transparent organization.  He has been residing in the US for over 17 years being professionally engaged in medical field. Involved in NRNA since 2013, he had served as an advisor to NRNA US from 2013-15, NRNA US President twice from 2017-19 and chief patron of NRNA US Chapter from 2019-21.  Dr Poudel has also been active in medical profession in Nepal through Green City Hospital. He is mostly known as a specialist of Internal Medicine. He had played a lead role in providing health materials and appliances worth amounting over tens of millions rupees to the Government of Nepal from the US for the treatment and prevention of present pandemic of COVID-19.  Beside involvement in medical sector, Dr Poudel has also his investment in hotel enterprises in the US.  Aspiring candidates have declared their candidacies for different positions in the virtual election to be held in the run-up of NRNA ICC on October 23-25. As many as 3,600 delegates from 65 countries are taking part in the virtual event.
