Action against 14 MPs including Madhav Nepal not necessary: Parliament Secretariat

KATHMANDU: The Federal Parliament Secretariat has said that it is not necessary to take action against 14 federal lawmakers as they already joined the newly registered CPN (Unified Socialist).  The CPN-UML, led by KP Sharma Oli, had expelled its 14 lawmakers including the then senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, on August 17 as they were preparing to form a new party.  The new party -- CPN (US) -- led by leader Nepal was registered at the Election Commission (EC) on August 26 following the introduction of party-split ordinance by the government.  “As the Madhav Nepal faction has recently been recognized as a separate political party, action against them is not necessary,” a high-level source told Ratopati quoting the parliament secretariat.

Yet another surprise move by Bagmati CM Shakya; switches to UML’s ‘new camp’

KATHMANDU, Aug 20: Ashta Laxmi Shakya, who had remained in the Madhav Nepal camp in the CPN-UML and had long been objecting to moves of party Chairman KP Sharma Oli, took helm of the chief ministership of Bagmati Province on Wednesday, as a surprise move.  Many raised questions on her recent move for ‘staking political morality for power and position. However, just a day after her first ‘surprise’, she made yet another surprise move. As an apparent message that she is ‘no longer in the Oli camp’, she joined the leaders in the ‘new camp’ and issued a joint appeal on Thursday. It came as a huge surprise for Oli who got erstwhile Chief Minister Dormani Poudel to resign and ensured she took over the post.  In their statement released late on Thursday, the nine leaders including Shakya demanded the establishment faction withdraw actions taken against 14 lawmakers of the party.  The UML, on Wednesday, sacked 14 parliamentarians including Madhav Kumar Nepal and wrote to the Federal Parliament Secretariat to relieve them of their positions.  Then senior leader of the party, Madhav Kumar Nepal, registered a new party named CPN-UML (Samajbadi), on Wednesday. In his petition submitted at the Election Commission (EC), names of 95 Central Committee members including 58 CC members of the UML. The list, however, did not include Shakya’s name.  She used to be a vocal critic of Chairman Oli following the party’s Ninth General Convention. So, there were speculations that she might join new party of leader Nepal. However, she opted to lead the Bagmati government.

UML sacks 14 lawmakers including Madhav Nepal

KATHMANDU, Aug 17: The main opposition party CPN-UML has sacked 14 lawmakers belonging to the party following the Sher Bahadur Deuba led government’s decision to introduce an ordinance amending provisions to split a political party.  The UML registered a letter at the Federal Parliament Secretariat seeking dismissal of their membership of the House of Representatives (HoR) on Tuesday.  Those relieved from their positions include Madhav Kumar Nepal, Jeevan Ram Shrestha, Mukunda Neupane, Ram Kumari Jhakri, Kalyani Kumari Khadka, Laxmi Chaudhary, Nira Devi Jairu, Pushpa Kumari Karna, Sarala Kumari Yadav, Kalila Khatun, Birodh Khatiwada, Krishna Lal Maharjan, Bhawani Khapung and Metmani Chaudhary.

UML’s Bhim Rawal withdraws resignation

KATHMANDU, July 23< Vice-Chairperson of the CPN-UML and a key leader of the Madhav Nepal-faction of the party, Bhim Bahadur Rawal, has withdrawn his resignation from the post of a member of the House of Representatives (HoR).  Spokesperson of the Federal Parliament Secretariat, Dr Rojnath Pandey, shared that Rawal withdrew the resignation which he had submitted to Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota on July 18. Rawal, elected from Achham-1 representing the UML, had submitted the resignation from the HoR member following the internal dispute in the party a couple of hours before Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba tabled the confidence motion in restored parliament. He had resigned from the post, expressing the concern that the game of politics is becoming non-political and unhealthy.   Chairperson KP Sharma Oli and senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal  urged leader Rawal to withdraw the resignation.

Will Deuba win trust motion?

KATHMANDU, July: In less than a week he was appointed the prime minister as per Article 76 (5) of the constitution, Sher Bahadur Deuba is scheduled to take a trust vote from parliament on Sunday afternoon.  Though he will have more than 25 days as per Article 76 (6), a confidence motion was registered at the Parliament Secretariat. The motion was also tabled at the Business Advisory Committee of the House of Representatives.  Will Deuba win the trust vote?  Deuba requires at least 136 votes in the 271-member HoR in order to win the motion. There are 61 members from the ruling Nepali Congress (NC) adn 49 from the CPN (Maoist Center) who will definitely vote for him. Similarly, the Upendra Yadav faction of the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP), which holds 17 votes, will also vote for him. The JSP has a total of 31 members. Rastriya Janamorcha’s Durga Poudel is also in the favor of Dauba. This means Deuba now has 128 votes.  Deuba requires an additional eight votes, which the CPN-UML’s Madhav Nepal faction is likely to cast in his favor as 23 members of the faction extended their support to him when he staked claim to the government on May 21.  The UML has a total of 121 members and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) and Nepal Workers Peasants Party (NWPP)have a member each. RPP and NWPP are less likely to vote for Deuba.
