KATHMANDU, Oct 10: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has started a neutering campaign for controlling the population of community dogs from today. After receiving complaints about the lack of dog management, KMC started a sterilization and vaccination campaign against rabies.

Patan High Court thwarts KMC-30 chairman’s plan to kill community dogs

KATHMANDU, July 27: The Patan High Court  has issued an interim order following initial hearings on a writ petition filed against the ward chairman of Kathmandu Metropolitan City-30, Dal Bahadur Karki, who threatened to kill all community dogs in his ward. The petition was filed by animal rights activist Sneha Shrestha and her team. Shrestha is the president of the  Federation of Animal Welfare Nepal and founder of Sneha’s Care, a shelter for sick and injured street animals.

It is estimated that the streets of Kathmandu Valley alone are home to over 35,000 dogs who lack love, care and healthy lives. About 81 percent of Nepal's population follows the Hindu religion which even dedicates a day for dogs known as ‘Kukur Tihar’ when the canines are worshiped but at other times, most of them receive cruel and inhumane treatment.
