UML continues House obstruction on Tuesday

KATHMANDU: The main opposition CPN-UML has continued obstructing the House proceedings on Tuesday as well. The lawmaker of the UML picketed the rostrum and started chanting slogans immediately after Speaker Angi Prasad Sapkota began Tuesday’s House proceedings. The main opposition has been obstructing the meetings of the House of Representatives (HoR) since the new session began on September 8. The UML has demanded the dismissal of 14 lawmakers whom it expelled on August 17.

UML to obstruct Wednesday’s HoR meeting

KATHMANDU, Feb 15: At the time when the ruling Nepali Congress (NC) has decided to table the Millennium Corporate Challenge (MCC), the main opposition party, CPN-UML has decided to continue the House obstruction. A meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) is scheduled for 1 PM on Wednesday. The main opposition party, UML, has been obstructing the House proceedings accusing Speaker Sapkota of not taking action against the 14 lawmakers including Madhav Kumar Nepal who later formed the CPN (Unified Socialist). Our demands have not been addressed yet, so the party will continue the obstruction, said Sher Bahadur Tamang, lawmaker of the UML. A parliamentary party meeting of the ruling Nepali Congress held on Tuesday took a decision to table the MCC in the next House session.

UML continues House obstruction, two ordinances passed

KATHMANDU: The main opposition CPN-UML continued obstructing the meeting of the House of Representatives on Tuesday as well. The UML had obstructed the first meeting of the winter session of parliament on December 14. The main opposition has been demanding that Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota publish a notice reading the expulsion of its 14 lawmakers including Madhav Kumar Nepal. Nepal, however, split from the UML and formed CPN (Unified Socialist) in August, earlier this year. As soon as Speaker Sapkota began Tuesday’s House proceedings, UML lawmakers picketed the rostrum and chanted slogans against him. The House, however, passed two ordinances amid obstruction and sloganeering by the main opposition. The meeting passed the 'Ordinance Amending Some Acts against Sexual Violence-2021' and the 'Ordinance to Amend Some Acts Related to Criminal Offenses and Criminal Procedure-2021' through the majority. Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Dilendra Prasad Badu presented the proposals separately, seeking the approval of both ordinances. The meeting, before approving the ordinances, had rejected with a majority the protest note from Prem Suwal of Nepal Workers and Peasants Party. The next HoR meeting has been scheduled for 1:00 PM on December 22.

CPN (UML) Chair Oli boycotts all-party meeting summoned by PM Deuba

KATHMANDU, September 30: Chairman of CPN (UML) KP Sharma Oli boycotted an all-party meeting called by Prime Minister Deuba on Thursday morning. The meeting was summoned at the PM’s office residence at Baluwatar to discuss the continuous House obstruction by the CPN (UML) and find a solution. CPN (UML) has been maintaining that it won’t participate in any sort of meeting attended by CPN (Unified Maoist) formed by the sprinter faction of the party-led by Madhav Kumar Nepal. Earlier, CPN (UML) took action against 14 lawmakers including Nepal. These lawmakers then registered a new party named CPN (Unified Socialist). The CPN (UML) has also filed a writ petition against the EC and Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota regarding the registration of CPN (Unified Socialist) and the case is sub-judice at the apex court.

KATHMANDU: An all-party meeting called by Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota has begun at the Lhotse Hall of the Federal Parliament Building in New Baneshwor. The meeting aims at resolving issues as the main opposition continued House obstruction since the new session began on Wednesday, last week. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli, CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushap Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, CPN (US) Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal, JSP Chair Upendra Yadav and DSP Chair Mahantha Thakur were asked to join the meeting. However, the main opposition UML has boycotted the meeting. Similarly, Durga Poudel of Rastriya Janamorcha, Prem Suwal of Nepal Workers and Peasants Party and Rajendra Lingden of Rastriya Prajatantra Party were also invited to the meeting.

House meeting adjourned as UML continues obstruction, next meeting on Tuesday

KATHMANDU: Amid the continued House obstruction by the main opposition CPN-UML, Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota adjourned the meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) until Tuesday. The UML lawmakers picked the rostrum and chanted slogans against Speaker Sapkota shortly after the latter began Sunday’s House proceedings. Speaker Sapkota deferred the meeting for 15 minutes and held consultations with UML Chief Whip Bishal Bhattarai, Whip Shanta Chaudhary and lawmaker Khagaraj Adhikari. However, the meeting could not forge consensus, leading the next meeting toward obstruction again. The main opposition has been objecting to Speaker Sapkota’s ‘failure’ to dismiss 14 lawmakers whom the party had sacked before the split. It is to be noted that the UML had sacked 14 lawmakers including the then senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal.

UML Chair Oli directs party’s lawmakers to continue House obstruction

KATHMANDU: Alleging Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota of being part of the 'conspiracy' to split his party, chairman of main opposition CPN-UML KP Sharma Oli has directed the lawmakers of the party to continue obstructing the House meetings. Addressing a meeting of the UML parliamentary party on Sunday, Oli, who is also the former prime minister, issued the directive to continue obstruction. The UML has been obstructing the meetings of the House of Representatives (HoR) after the new House session began on Wednesday, last week. Finance Minister Janardan Sharma tabled the substitution bill amid the UML obstruction on Friday

UML lawmakers continue House obstruction on Sunday

KATHMANDU: Lawmakers of the main opposition CPN-UML have continued House obstruction on Sunday as well. Immediately after Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota began the House proceedings, lawmakers of the main opposition picketed the rostrum and chanted slogans against Speaker Sapkota. for not taking action against 14 lawmakers including Madhav Kumar Nepal, Chairman of newly formed CPN (Unified Socialist), whom the UML had sacked. They also demanded the Speaker restrict the entry of those 14 lawmakers. Speaker Sapkota deferred the House proceedings for 15 minutes amid the obstruction. The UML also obstructed House meetings on Wednesday and Friday as well.
