Netflix introduces AV1 streaming for smart TVs and PS4 Pro

Netflix has begun broadcasting the AV1 codec to a limited number of TVs and PlayStation 4 Pro consoles. The Alliance of Open Media has granted the AV1 codec a royalty-free license, making it the most recent video codec in the industry (AOMedia). Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Intel, Netflix, Microsoft, and others are among the companies that support the codec. Netflix is now offering AV1 streaming on a limited number of TVs. However, owing to PS4 Pro compatibility, Netflix material may be streamed in AV1 to any TV connected to the game console. In February of last year, Netflix began offering AV1 video streaming on its Android app. Netflix published a blog post announcing the debut of AV1 playback on TVs. Netflix will first provide several of its popular films with the new codec, including Money Heist, because AV1 requires more CPU hours to encode. "We have a stream analyzer built into our encoding workflow that guarantees all Netflix AV1 streams are consistent with the...

Netflix iOS games could take a different route, compared to Android

Netflix recently announced the introduction of a mobile game service for Android customers, confirming its push into gaming. Additionally, Netflix has stated that it is working on making the gaming service available to iOS customers as well. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, doing the same may be difficult due to Apple's App Store restrictions prohibiting Netflix from making games available through its app. Other third-party applications are currently not allowed to provide apps within the App Store. This is also why Xbox Cloud Gaming and Google Stadia have yet to arrive on iOS. Netflix would distribute its games through the App Store, according to Mark Gurman's claim, and code unearthed by developer Steve Moser and shared with Bloomberg corroborated this. If this is the case, users will be unable to download or play games directly from the Netflix app. Even on Android, the games are downloaded individually from the Google Play Store, despite the fact that they...

GameStop COO Jenna Owens Exits After a Short 7-Month Stint

Jenna Owens, the video game retailer's chief operating officer, agreed to depart GameStop on Friday, barely seven months after joining the firm as its chief operating officer. It's the first big management resignation at GameStop since Matt Furlong, the company's new CEO, was hired in June. Owens joined GameStop in March after serving as a top executive at Amazon and Alphabet's Google. She was one of the IT veterans enlisted by Ryan Cohen, the co-founder and former CEO of online pet food store Chewy, as he created the framework for turning the dormant brick-and-mortar shop into an e-commerce behemoth. Owens' departure, which is effective immediately, was not given a reason by GameStop. In a regulatory statement, the business claimed it and Owens had struck a "separation agreement," which is routinely made when companies and their CEOs disagree. Separation agreements were also employed by GameStop when company parted ways with its chief financial...

Facebook’s corporate name changed to Meta

Facebook has changed its corporate name to Meta as part of a major rebrand. The company said it would better "encompass" what it does, as it broadens its reach beyond social media into areas like virtual reality (VR). The change does not apply to its individual platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp, only the parent company that owns them. The move follows a series of negative stories about Facebook, based on documents leaked by an ex-employee. Frances Haugen has accused the company of putting "profits over safety". In 2015, Google restructured its company calling its parent firm Alphabet, however, the name has not caught on. Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg announced the new name as he unveiled plans to build a "metaverse" - an online world where people can game, work and communicate in a virtual environment, often using VR headsets. He said the existing brand could not "possibly represent everything that we're doing today, let alone in the future", and needed to change. BBC
