NC Gen Convention: Election process begins today, nomination at 10 AM (with schedule)

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) is scheduled to begin the election process as part of 14th General Convention from Saturday.  The general convention formally kicked off on Friday amidst a grand event held at Bhrikuti Mandap in the capital.  According to the NC central election committee, the representatives are from 165 federal election constituencies, sister wings and liaison committees from different countries will participate in the election process for new leadership.  The party said that nomination for the candidacy will be held from 10 AM to 5 PM on Saturday at the City Hall in the Exhibition Road.  The committee said that complaints on the candidates and probe would be made from 5 PM to 7 PM on Saturday itself while the decision on the complaints would be finalized in another two hours --- 7 PM to 9 PM.  Similarly, the final name list of the candidates would be released at 12:15 PM on Sunday while the voting for the leadership will begin at  8AM  on Monday, coordinator of committee Gopal Krishna Ghimire said.  The voting will be convened in Bhrikutimandap and the City Hall. A total of 29 types of ballots would be used.  As many as 4,743 delegates elected from across the country decide the fate of aspirants for various key positions of the ruling party.  According to the party statute of NC, a total of 13 office bearers will be elected by the delegates for the general convention.  A president and two vice presidents will be elected. Similarly, two general secretaries and eight joint general secretaries will be elected from the ongoing convention. The eight positions for joint secretary general include one each from eight different clusters. The clusters allocated for the position include females, indigenous nationalities, Dalit, Madhesi, Khas/Arya, Tharu Muslim, and backward region.  Similarly, a 134-member central committee including 13 office bearers would also be elected during the ongoing general convention.  Meanwhile, Sher Bahadur Deuba has announced his candidacy for the position of party president. He even solicited votes for the next tenure while addressing the inaugural session on Friday.  Bimalendra Nidhi, too, has announced to engage in the presidential bid.  The rival faction close to Ram Chandra Poudel, however, is finding it difficult to field a common candidate despite several rounds of meetings.

EC to grant time for NC to file candidacy following demise of it's candidate

KATHMANDU, Nov 9: The Election Commission (EC) has decided to grant time to the Nepali Congress (NC) to file new candidacy for the upcoming election of the federal and provincial level following demise of Shekhar Chandra Thapa, Minister for Forest, Environment and Soil Conservation of Province 1. Thapa was Morang 3 (1) candidate of Nepali Congress. Thapa breathed his last at 10:40 AM this morning at Noble Hospital. He was suffering from pneumonia. NC will now file candidacy of a new candidate and the election will be held on the pre scheduled date, according to the poll body. According to the Provincial Assembly Member Election Act, 2074, a party can file a candidacy of a new candidate if any candidate for the election dies.

EC seeks clarification from CPN (US), NC leader Koirala

KATHMANDU, April 11: The Election Commission (EC) on Monday sought clarification from the CPN (Unified Socialist) Party and the Nepali Congress (NC) leader Shashank Koirala regarding their recent activities related to the upcoming local level election. “We have received complaints from news media and social media that the CPN (US) defied the election code of conduct issued by the poll body during its public gathering held at Bhrikutimandap, Kathmandu on Saturday. So, the poll body has sought clarification about the issue from the party within three days,” said an official of the commission during the conference. Likewise, the poll body has also urged NC leader Shashank Koirala to clarify the cost of local level elections held in 2074 BS within seven days. Earlier, Koirala had submitted a report that while contesting in the election from Bardaghat Election Constituency-1, it had cost Rs 2,175,000. However, in various news media, Koirala has maintained that the election cost was Rs 60 million.

NC District Convention: Know new presidents in Sindhupalchowk, Bara, Sarlahi

KATHMANDU, March 14: Junga Bahadur Lama has been elected in the post of the district President of Nepali Congress, Sindhupalchowk.  He garnered 912 votes to emerge victorious to the post.  His close contender Bamshalal Tamang got 848 votes. According to the Election Committee, the second round election was held on Sunday. A total of 1783 votes were cast in the second round election. Yadav elected NC Bara President Rajesh Roy Yadav has been elected as the President of Nepali Congress, Bara. He got elected to the post with 1,206 votes.  His close contender Shambu Bahadur Budhathoki received 1,155 votes.  Chief Election Commissioner Gangeshwar Prasad Adhikari informed that 29 votes were invalid in the election.  Newly-elected President Yadav pledged to move ahead with unison in the party. "We have no option but to work together to make the NC victorious in the local level election". Singh elected NC Sarlahi President Surendra Prasad Singh has emerged victorious for the post of President of Nepali Congress (NC), Sarlahi. He obtained 1,758 votes while his arch-rival Laxman Roy got 1,378 votes.  District Election Officer Nageswor Prasad Singh had announced names of other elected office-bearers on the occasion.  In the election held under the 14th district convention, the vice-presidents elected were Nabin Adhikari, Dr Saroj Kumar and Sheikh Sadullahal. Among others elected are Niraj Karki (secretary) and Indra Bahadur Yonjan and Sunil Kumar Kusawaha (joint-secretary).

NC to conduct convention in 16 districts on Jan 11

KATHMANDU, December 28: The ruling Nepali Congress (NC) has decided to hold the party conventions in the remaining 16 districts on January 11. The meeting of the central election committee of the NC took the decision that the 16 districts which failed to hold the conventions in time would now hold the district convention on January 11. Earlier, during the party’s 14th General Election, conventions were held in 61 districts only. The districts waiting for the convention as part of the 14th general convention of the party are Saptari, Siraha, Dhanusha, Mahottari, Sarlahi, Rautahat, Bara, Parsa, Sindhuli, Makwanpur, Sindhupalchowk, Chitwan, Banke, Kailali, Accham and Nawalpur. The NC has already conducted the provincial conventions and the central general convention.

NC new CWC meeting tomorrow

KATHMANDU, Dec 24: A meeting of the Nepali Congress (NC) Central Working Committee elected by the party's 14th General Convention has been scheduled for Saturday at the party central office, Sanepa. According to party office secretary Keshab Rijal, a certificate distribution program to the newly elected office bearers and central members has been scheduled to start from 11:00 am and the meeting will commence once the certificate distribution gets over.   It may be noted that the NC national gathering (December 10-14) held in Kathmandu elected 134 office-bearers and the central members. As per the party’s revised statute, the party Central President shall nominate 33 members.   The 13th General Convention had elected the 85-member Central Committee.  Party President and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba is scheduled to thank all the elected people, welcome them and make a decision of renewing the party registration in the Election Commission.

NC postpones conventions of 16 districts

KATHMANDU, December 2:  At the time when its 14th National General Convention is on its doorsteps, the ruling Nepali Congress (NC) postponed its district convention of 16 districts on Thursday. According to the Central Election Committee of the NC, district conventions in 16 districts have been postponed as the Provincial Convention of the party kicked off today. “Conventions in these districts will be held after the National Congress,” reads a press statement issued by the committee. The NC has completed its district conventions in 61 districts.  The sixteen districts where the convention has been postponed includes all the eight districts of Province 2, Chitwan, Sindhuli, Makwanpura and Sindhupalchowk in Bagmati Province, East-Nawalparasi  in Gandaki Province, Banke in Lumbini Province and Kailali and Accham in Sudurpaschim Province.

NC urges EC to book those publicising election candidates during silence period

KATHMANDU, May 20: Main opposition Nepali Congress has urged the Election Commission to take action against those making publicity of the candidates during the silence period under the by-elections to the National Assembly.  The meeting of the NC Parliamentary Party on Wednesday took a decision to this effect. Voting in the by-elections is ongoing.  Silence period is 48 hours before voting and it prohibits the publicity related to elections on any platform during the time, according to the Election Code of Conduct. The NC has accused the Prime Minister and minister Krishna Gopal Shrestha of breaching the laws by asking for a vote for a particular candidate.
