Nepal, India agree to develop large hydropower projects in Nepal

KATHMANDU, Feb. 25: Nepal and India have agreed to develop large hydropower projects in Nepal through joint investments, Nepal's Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation said on Thursday. During a secretary-level joint steering committee meeting, the two sides agreed to set up a joint technical team to work on the plan, the ministry said in a press statement. "We're still in the early stage of discussion on developing large hydropower projects through joint investments," Chiranjeevi Chataut, joint secretary at the ministry, told Xinhua. According to him, no project has been identified for joint investments. Indian companies are currently involved in some large hydropower projects in Nepal, including the 900 megawatts (MW) Arun-III Hydropower Project in eastern Nepal and the 900MW Upper Karnali Hydropower Project in western Nepal. According to the Nepali ministry, the two sides also agreed that the Nepal Electricity Authority and the Power Grid Corporation of India would set up a joint venture by April to construct a 400 kilovolts (KV) new Butwal-Gorakhpur transmission line on the Indian side. Nepal will construct part of the proposed transmission line on its side, as the two countries agreed to jointly fund a 140-km-long transmission line on the Indian side in September last year. Currently, power trade between Nepal and India is conducted through the Dhalkebar-Muzaffarpur cross-border transmission line in eastern Nepal, which has a capacity of 400KV. Nepal aims to export its surplus electricity to Indian markets, during the monsoon in particular. In November last year, India allowed Nepal to export 39MW of electricity to the country through its energy exchange market. India has also agreed to allow Nepal to export more electricity to India in the upcoming monsoon season, according to the Nepali ministry. In addition, Nepal and India have agreed to conduct a feasibility study on the construction of a cross-border transmission line between Nepal and India's West Bengal State, and such a transmission line may work as a transit for power trading between Nepal and Bangladesh, said Chataut.

IBN approves investment of Rs 73 billion for two hydropower projects

KATHMANDU: The Investment Board Nepal (IBN) has approved investments worth approximately Rs 73 billion for the construction and development of two hydropower projects. The 48th meeting of the IBN presided over by its chairperson and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba on Saturday took the decision to this effect. As per the investment approval, the 56-megawatt Jumkhola hydropower project based in Dolakha district will attract investment of around Rs 10.5 billion while the 900-megawatt Arun III hydropower project based in Sankhuwasabha district will receive an investment of Rs 62.26 billion. Likewise, the meeting also decided to form a high-level study committee under the coordination of IBN vice-chairperson for the committee to submit a report relating to the 900-megawatt Upper Karnali hydropower project to the IBN within 45 days. The committee comprises representatives from the Ministries of Finance, Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation and Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, the IBN chief executive officer and an expert. IBN joint secretary is the member secretary of the committee as informed. Similarly, it was decided to approve the annual budget and programs of the IBN for the fiscal year, 2021/22 and approve the share purchase and sale agreement of Samrat Cement and the Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower project. On the occasion, PM Deuba directed all concerned sectors to make a long-term plan relating to electricity consumption increment and create an environment conducive for investment. IBN chief executive officer Sushil Bhatta apprised the event of the progress of projects launched by the IBN and its progress and activities. Four hydropower projects halt production

MYAGDI, September 7: Four hydroelectricity projects operating in Myagdi, Mustang and Parbat have halted power production after a transmission tower collapsed. The transmission tower at Chuwa of Kushma Municipality-8, Parbat district has fallen down, leading to disruption in the supply of total 70.6 megawatts electricity from two power plants from Myagdi and one each from Parbat and Mustang. The Number 4 tower of the 132 KV transmission line connecting the powerhouse of the Modikhola-1 Hydroelectricity Project with Modi sub-station had collapsed due to the flood and landslide occurred last Friday. Upendra Gautam, Managing Director of United Modi, the promoter of the 10-megawatt-capacity Modi-1 Hydroelectricity Project, said the rest of the hydropower projects connected to the national transmission grid via the Modi sub-station have been affected due to this. It is said soil and debris has deposited in the 500 metres long canal of Modi-1 project. Its dam has also been damaged due to the flooding. Along with Modi-1, the 42 megawatts capacity Mistrikhola hydroelectricity project at Narchyang, Annapurna rural municipality-4 and the five megawatts capacity Ghalemdikhola project in Myagdi district as well as the 13.6 megawatts capacity Thapakhola Hydropower Project at Tukuche in Mustang have stopped production. Representative of Mistrikhola Hydroelectricity Project, Chudamani Niraula said the four hydropower projects were incurring losses of millions of rupees due to Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA)'s delay in construction of a diversion tower and repairing the collapsed transmission tower. Mountain Energy Nepal is the promoter of the Mistrikhola project.
