Local elections: 385 independent candidates secure victory

KATHMANDU, May 28: Altogether 385 independent candidates sealed victory in the May 13 local elections so far, according to the Election Commission of Nepal.

Local elections indicate changing trend among voters

The country on Friday successfully conducted local level elections nationwide. This local polls is the second of its kind after the country adopted a federal republic system following promulgation of a new Constitution in 2015. The local polls were largely peaceful except for few reports of clashes amid tight security. People throughout the country, including as old as 113-year-old voter, enthusiastically participated in the polls to elect 35,211 representatives of their choice for 753 local units from 145,011 candidates.

KATHMANDU, May 13: Voting is currently underway in all the 753 local units across the country. Voting kicked off at 7:00 AM today in 21,955 polling centers at 10,756 polling stations across the country and it will continue till 5:00 PM today.  People will be electing a total of 35,221 representatives including mayors/ chair person and deputy mayors/vice chairperson, ward chairs, Dalit women members, women members and open ward members through the today's election taking place second time since the country  switched to a federal set-up.  It may be noted that 390 candidates have already been elected unopposed in the election. According to the Election Commission, 65 political parties are taking part in the election though it had registered 79 parties for the election purposes.   A total of 109,088 employees have been mobilized in the election.
