Third wave of coronavirus may begin by October 1: Health Ministry

KATHMANDU, July 26: Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has projected that the third wave of the novel coronavirus disease  (COVID-19) may begin from October 1 later this year.  Presenting a brief description of the efforts made by the government for the prevention and control of COVID-19 at the Education and Health Committee of parliament on Monday, the officials at ministry said that the third wave of infection could begin by the first week of October.  According to Ganga Lohani, a joint secretary of the ministry, the infection rate may increase again in November and December.  “However, the nature of the new variant, availability and administration of the vaccine, social activity and adherence to basic public health standards could impact the rate,” he added.

75 percent of those dying from COVID-19 found unvaccinated: Health Ministry

KATHMANDU, Aug 10: Of those dying from the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in recent days, more than 75 percent of them were found to be unvaccinated against the disease, according to the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP). According to the ministry, people who are unvaccinated against the disease are at high risk and has urged those people to get vaccinated as soon as possible. So far, as many as 11,974 people have succumbed to COVID-19. As of Tuesday, 61 COVID-19 patients are in ICU and seven are undergoing treatment on ventilators.

COVID-19: 1,066 new cases detected, 938 patients recover

KATHMANDU: Officials on Friday confirmed as many as 1,066 new coronavirus cases and 938 recoveries.  A total of 898 cases were detected through the RT-PCR tests and 168 others through antigen testing methods, revealed the daily coronavirus updates released by the Health Ministry. As many as 13,368 tests were carried out in the past 24 hours as of Friday afternoon.  Meanwhile, 13 people succumbed to the disease on Friday.  Similarly, 217,391 were vaccinated against the disease.

MoHP reports 2,279 new COVID cases, 23 deaths on Monday

The Ministry of Health and Population Monday confirmed the detection of 2,279 new cases of coronavirus infection. With this, the COVID count has reached 699,649.

Health Ministry directs provinces to ensure oxygen-filled cylinder

KATHMANDU, July 27: The Ministry of Health and Population has directed the social development ministry in each province to ensure the management of at least 1,000 oxygen-filled cylinders. In the wake of rising cases of coronavirus infection, the third wave would break at any time, the Ministry said, adding that oxygen-filled cylinders must be kept ready, according to Dr Madan Kumar Upadhyay, chief of Quality and Regulation Division at Ministry.  "Despite the health protocol and lockdown in place, the rate of coronavirus infection has not declined of late. We can't deny the next wave of COVID-19 pandemic. The province governments are directed to stockpile the oxygen-filled cylinders so that it would be easy to cope up the imminent crisis," Dr Upadhyay shared. On Monday itself, the education and health committee of the House of Representatives was made aware that the third wave of COVID-19 would begin in Nepal by coming October 1. The province ministries were also directed to keep intact oxygen plant, oxygen tank, oxygen concentrators.

Health Ministry urges people not to use ‘Corona Guard’

KATHMANDU, July 15:  The Ministry of Health and Population has urged all not to use ‘corona guard’.  Issuing a notice, the Ministry asked not to buy ‘corona guard’ which it said was being sold in the market claiming it would prevent, control and make coronavirus inactive.  Joint Spokesperson of the Ministry, Dr Samir Kumar Adhikari, requested all not to buy such misleading 'card' as the ‘corona guard’ which does not work in prevention and control of coronavirus.   He said, “Such guard, as advertised, that is claimed will make coronavirus inactive and those using this card should not wear mask, is baseless. No such technology to control COVID-19 has been developed so far.” The Ministry last year had urged one and all not to use ‘virus removing card’, which was also said for use to protect from coronavirus. Vaccination, always wearing face masks and following all health safety protocols is only the measure to be safe from coronavirus infection, according to the Ministry.  The Ministry also requested one and all to use health safety protocols as risk of coronavirus has increased with relaxation of the prohibitory order.

Health Ministry confirms new variant of COVID-19 in Nepal

KATHMANDU, May 18: The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has confirmed that three variants of the coronavirus have been detected in Nepal.  Ministry assistant spokesperson Dr Sameer Kumar Adhiakri,on Tuesday, said that the result of gene sequencing of samples collected from 35 districts showed that the B.1.617.2 variant  was detected in 34 samples while the B.1.617.1 variant was confirmed in a sample.The gene sequencing was performed at CSIR Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology in India.  Adhikari added that the B.1.617.2 is the variant detected in India in recent days while B.1.617.1 is a UK variant. Nepal first reported the Chinese variant last year.  The World Health Organization (WHO) earlier on May 10 classified the coronavirus variant first found in India as a "variant of global concern". Issuing a public statement earlier on Tuesday, the ministry urged the people to adhere to public health protocols as the new variant is more infectious and deadlier to all age groups.

Next few weeks are challenging for Nepal: Health Ministry

20 districts asked to tighten ongoing prohibitory orders  KATHMANDU, May 18: The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has said that the people are still defying prohibitory orders enforced by the local administrations despite the rising fears of the second wave of the coronavirus disease triggered by the new variant of the virus.  Issuing a statement on Monday, the ministry said that public movement has decreased by only 59 percent. “Studies have shown that people are still found not abiding by the necessary public health protocols.” According to the ministry, next few weeks are still challenging for Nepal in its fight against the deadlier strain.  Meanwhile, 20 districts including Kathmandu, Rupandehi, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Morang and Kailali are asked to tighten the ongoing prohibitory orders. Similarly, district administration in Kaski, Banke, Dang, Chitwan, Surkhet, Jhapa, Kanchanpur, Makwanpur, Dhanusha, Kavrepalanchowk, Sunsari, Parsa, Bardiya and Palpa need to implement restriction orders effectively.
