UML split leaves impact on district politics

The CPN-UML was formally split a week ago after the Election Commission registered and certified CPN (Unified Socialist), a breakaway faction of UML. The split now has an impact on the district politics. Though the impact of the split is less among the people's representatives, it mostly affected the district committee of UML.

Oli, not NC, is responsible for UML split: Pushpa Bhushal

KATHMANDU, October 1: Pushpa Bushal, the whip of Nepali Congress (NC), has said Chairman of CPN (UML) KP Sharma Oli is solely responsible for the split of his party. She added that the Nepali Congress (NC)did not have any role to play in the split. In an interview with Ratopati, NC Whip Bhusal maintained that Oli’s unconstitutional moves, but not the NC, resulted in the split of the CPN (UML). “CPN (UML) suffered split not because the NC came into power. If we look into the background of UML’s split, it dates way back. The Oli-led government was never responsible toward parliament, the constitution and the citizens. The then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli kept on taking unconstitutional moves challenging the constitution itself. He misused the majority government. He dissolved the House of Representatives (HoR) not once but twice. Oli’s move triggered protests and demonstrations a which can be considered the beginning phase of the split of CPN (UML),” said Bhusal. Earlier, the government introduced a ‘party split ordinance which allowed the political parties to split if 20 percent members of the Central Committee or Parliamentary party opted to form a new political party. When asked whether the ordinance introduced by the government helped the splinter faction of UML-led by Madhav Kumar Nepal form a new party, Bhusal said that the ordinance was for national politics. “Oli dissolved parliament and was looking forward to a midterm election. For the effective implementation of the constitution and stable government a majority government was essential, so the ordinance was introduced and annulled after fulfilling its objectives,” she said. ‘No impact’ of UML split in Gandaki Province

KATHMANDU: Following the formal split of the main opposition CPN-UML and the formation of the CPN (Unified Socialist), the people’s representatives at the provincial and local levels are in the process of verifying themselves to join the new party led by UML’s the then senior leader and former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal. Members of provincial assemblies in six provinces have been visiting the designated election offices to authenticate themselves. However, the scenario in Gandaki Province is quite different. The provincial assembly seems unaffected by the UML split. Ten province assembly members in Province 1 and 13 lawmakers in Province 2 and Bagmati each have already renounced the UML and joined the new party. Similarly, one lawmaker of Lumbini, three of Karnali and 13 of Sudur Paschim provinces also joined the CPN (US). However, no provincial assembly member in Gandaki has so far opted to join the new party headed by leader Madhav Kumar Nepal. Indra Lal Sapkota, a Gandaki lawmaker, opted to remain with the UML though he was reportedly close to the Nepal faction as the erstwhile ruling party had been witnessing a heightened dispute. The CPN (US) seems to have no representation in the Gandaki Province Assembly as most lawmakers are said to be close to the UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli.

Province 1 CM Rai in minority after UML split

KATHMANDU, Aug 19: With CPN-UML’s formal split on Wednesday, the UML-led government in Province 1 has been put in the minority. UML’s Sher Dhan Rai-led majority government has fallen in minority as the UML’s erstwhile senior leader Madhav Nepal-faction has a strong command in the provincial assembly. Leader Nepal, on Wednesday, registered the CPN-UML (Samajbadi) a day after the government introduced an ordinance relating to party-splitting. Impact of UML split Ruling UML has a total of 51 lawmakers in the 93-strong provincial assembly, meaning UML had a comfortable majority until its split. However, with the split in the UML, at least 15 lawmakers, reportedly close to Madhav Nepal, are likely to withdraw their support to the Rai-led government and join the UML (Samajbadi). The UML requires the support of at least 11 other members of the provincial assembly to win the majority. Following the new political development, UML will have 36 members. Main opposition Nepali Congress has 21 members and CPN (Maoist Center) 15. Similarly, UML (Samajbadi) and Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) will have 15 and three lawmakers respectively while Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) and Federal Democratic Front have one member each. The opposition alliance is likely to form a new government as the NC, Maoist Center, UML (Samajbadi) and JSP collectively make 54.

Oli, Nepal to make first public addresses after UML split

KATHMANDU, August 19: Chairperson of CPN-UML, KP Sharma Oli and Madhav Kumar Nepal are scheduled to make public addressesin separate events on Thursday afternoon. While Oli will be addressing as the Chairperson of CPN-UML, Nepal will make his first public address as chairperson of CPN-UML (Samajbadi). Oli will be addressing a program organised by the District Committee, Bhaktapur at Chunadevi while Nepal will be addressing an event at Kathmandu. Nepal will be accompanied by Chairman of CPN (Maoist Center) Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Dr Baburam Bhattarai, former Prime Minister and Federal Council Chair of Janata Samajbadi Party.
