Child labour is still common in Bangladesh, with some minors working in unsafe industries. The cost is high in terms of poor health and missed education. Fully prohibiting child labour is not an option in view of widespread poverty, but attempts to regulate it have not been successful either.
In July 2021, a devastating fire in a factory on the outskirts of Dhaka killed 52 people. Children and teenagers were among the victims. Employees had been locked up in the food-processing facility, forced to work long hours.
