FNJ urges Gandaki province government to withdraw 'Mass Media Bill'

KATHMANDU, September 17: The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has asked Gandaki province government to withdraw the 'bill designed to manage mass media', which is recently tabled at the Province Assembly. Saying the proposed bill is against the press freedom, freedom of expression and the spirit of the constitution, the FNJ urged the Gandaki province government not to forward the bill immediately.  The FNJ drew the attention of the bodies concerned to rewrite the bill making it in line with professional journalism and press freedom-friendly with participation of FNJ and other stakeholders by withdrawing the bill immediately from the province assembly.  A press release issued by the FNJ today reads, "The FNJ has been putting forth its dissatisfaction towards the bill saying some of the provisions in the bill are against press freedom. It is unfortunate to table the bill in the province assembly by neglecting the FNJ's concern. Such move has clearly shown that the province government is trying to control the press." "The bill tabled by Gandaki province government has anti-press provisions like controlling the press, curtailing the press freedom and jail sentence to journalists. So, the FNJ determines that the bill is against the sentiments of the constitution," reads the statement.

FNJ Province 1 to institute Rs 10 million fund for welfare programmes

ITAHARI, August 9: Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) Province 1 Committee has decided to institute a fund worth Rs 10 million for the social security of journalists of the province.  FNJ Province 1 Committee came to this decision after second full-fledged meeting of the provincial committee.  ''This fund will be used for professional journalists affected by pandemic, disasters and other varied troubles,'' informed Lawa Dev Dhungana, the Vice-President of FNJ Province 1 Committee. According to Dhungana, the name of the fund will be 'Journalist Welfare Fund, Province No. 1''.  ''We will manage the entire fund within the tenure of this committee,'' said elated Dhungana.  He said the fund would be a good welfare programme for around 1300 journalists who are member of FNJ Province No. 1 and others.  Issuing the press release of the decisions of second full meeting of FNJ Province 1 Committee, Bibek Gautam, the General Secretary, informed that four journalists have succumbed to COVID-19 in the province and 125 have been infected.  Likewise, four departments have been created namely organizational, women, inclusion and Dalit. General Secretary Bibek Gautam will lead organizational department, Vice-President Himakumari Chemjong will head women department and Secretary Santosh Yadav and working committee member PB Diyali will chair inclusion and Dalit departments respectively.  The meeting has also urged all media operators to pay pending dues of all working journalists from their respective organizations and has asked government to support startup news media outlets run by working journalists themselves.  Now, FNJ Provincial Committee will issue identity card of all members of journalists within the province that was previously issued from FNJ Central Committee, said General Secretary Gautam in the press release. Likewise, the meeting has requested all insurance companies to pay pending insurance amounts to all journalists in the province.

FNJ Bhaktapur chapter objects to Bagmati province's plan to run media

BHAKTAPUR, June 20:  Bhaktapur chapter of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has submitted a memorandum to the Bagmati Province government, showing serious concern over its plan to establish and run mass media on its own. The chapter argued in the memorandum that the province government was planning to run its own media with the intention to shutdown the television, radio, and newspapers currently run in 13 districts.  The chapter submitted the memorandum via Chief District Officer of Bhaktapur, Prem Prasad Bhattarai, today. The allocation of Rs 100 million in the recent policy and programme and the annual budget to set up mass media had undoubtedly targeted to stifle the current media, Bhaktapur FNJ concluded. It further asserted, "We are of firm opinion that Bagamati Province government's plan to own and run media not only smothers media run by private and community but also suppresses free press and public voice, thereby mocking at democratic values,". It is stated that Bagmati Province has large share of total media in the country – 66 percent, where there are 48 percent of FNJ members. The Bhaktapur chapter has however demanded allocation of financial grants and public advertisement for the protection, promotion and capacity building of mass media. The province government is warned of stern agitation if the move was not corrected on time.  Receiving the memorandum, CDO Bhattarai said it would be forwarded to the province government with due respect to freedom of expression and press.  ----

FNJ Solukhumbu to institute ‘emergency relief fund’

SOLUKHUMBU, May 31: The Solukhumbu chapter of Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) is set to institute an ‘emergency relief fund’.  A meeting of the chapter on Sunday took the decision to set up the fund, shared its chair Nutan Shrestha. According to him, the meeting also endorsed a work procedure to operate the relief fund.  The work procedure is said to cover general members of the FNJ chapter. It has also made an arrangement to provide support to its member(s) when medical treatment is required in case of accidental injury while performing their jobs as part of any media house.  Shrestha further informed that the fund can be mobilized to support journalists in case of mutilation or having complicated disease, accidental death, illness of their family members and any incident of fire and natural calamities.  He also informed that the FNJ chapter will deposit Rs 111,111 to the fund from its bank account and other options will also be explored to enlarge the fund.

813 journalists contract coronavirus

KATHMANDU, May A total of 813 journalists and media persons have so far  tested positive for coronavirus in the country.  According to the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), so far 16 journalists have succumbed to the virus.  The FNJ stated that three journalists are receiving treatment in ICU and three others are in a ventilator.  Meanwhile, the FNJ also condemned the act of issuing threats to a journalist in Sunsari district. Different organizations had issued statements by the use of offensive terminologies against Ratna Prasad  reacting to a news story. The FNJ has also asked the stakeholders to ensure professional security of the journalists and immediately bring to book those individuals involved in threatening the media person.

Over 750 journalists contract Covid-19, 13 dead: FNJ

KATHMANDU, May 16: Over 750 journalists have been infected with Covid-19 and 13 succumbed to death so far, according to the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ). The FNJ, an umbrella organization of journalists/media workers, has appealed to all journalists to acknowledge the intensity of the ongoing crisis and its probable health risks. The Federation also urged the journalists to focus on personal health safety as well.  “Journalists are urged to continue with the profession by taking all possible health safety measures,” said the FNJ in a press statement here today.  Meanwhile, the FNJ has expressed sorrow over the demise of Shanti Ram Karki, Chairperson of FNJ Channel Nepal Pratishthan Unit.  The 34-year-old journalist who had tested positive for the Coronavirus on May 2. He passed away on Saturday morning at Manmohan memorial hospital in Swayambhu, Kathmandu.  “With the passing away of Karki, Nepali journalism has lost a promising, professional and dynamic young personality,’’ mourned the FNJ, praying for the eternal peace to the departed and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

91 journalists under FNJ corporate province contract coronavirus

KATHMANDU, May 7: As many as 91 journalists associated to the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) under its corporate branches have so far contracted the coronavirus.  FNJ Corporate Province shared that 91 working journalists of 25 media houses, including 19 corporate branches had been confirmed with the COVID-19. The data was collected through telephonic conversation undertaken by FNJ Corporate Province with the chairpersons and journalists of different 48 media, including 33 corporate branches.  Corporate Province Chair Bal Krishna Adhikari informed that a central committee member elected from corporate province, a province committee member, two chairpersons of corporate branches and former central secretary among other office-bearers have been diagnosed with coronavirus.  Adhikari further shared that journalists serving with 25 media house, including Rastriya Samachar Samiti, Radio Nepal, Gorkhapatra, Kantipur Television, Kantipur, Rajdhani, Nepal Television, Mountain TV, Nepal Press, Avenues, Metro FM and Naya Patrika have tested positive for the virus.   Informing that coronavirus-infected journalists are undergoing treatment at different hospitals, including Manmohan Hospital, Patan Hospital, Norvic Hospital, Teku Hospital and Nepal Police Hospital, the Corporate Province leadership has wished for the speedy recovery of entire journalists receiving treatment.

517 journalists suffer job insecurity since Covid-19 pandemic

KATHMANDU, May 3: The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has urged media houses to ensure job security of media professionals amidst the Covid-19 crisis.   As many as 517 journalists have so far become suffered job insecurity due to Covid-19 pandemic. FNJ’s media monitoring unit revealed that the highest number of journalists/media workers faced the cases of job insecurity in the past one year.  The FNJ, an umbrella organisation of journalists, has urged media houses not to expel journalists and cut off their facilities and to pay special attention to their health in the present context, according to FNJ Chair Bipul Pokhrel.  In a message of best wishes on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day-2021 today, the FNJ chair said journalists are facing double whammy amidst the raging Covid-19 crisis: professionally they are bound to reach their audiences with accurate and reliable information and at the same they face the greater risk of being relieved of their jobs.  The FNJ records showed that 45 anti-press freedom incidents were reported in a year and 584 journalists including 77 women and three media houses became the victims of such cases.     Likewise, six journalists were arrested in the reporting period and four journalists faced obstructions in course of carrying out their duties and seizure of their belongings. Similarly, 48 journalists were subjected to physical assaults, 12 faced threat and misbehave and 517 were displaced from the profession.  May 3 every year is observed as the World Press Freedom Day at the call of the UNESCO in commemoration of the 1991 Namibia Declaration which had expressed strong commitments to the Press freedom.  On the occasion of the Day, FNJ chair Pokhrel  has expressed reverence to those fighting for the free press in Nepal and outside and extended best wishes to all who are in the support of the freedom of expression.  As he describes the freedom of the Press is not only the concern of journalists, instead its practice is essential to ensure the people’s right to information enshrined by the constitution. “Its importance does not limit here, it is a vital component of the democratic society, he said.  Though the constitution has guaranteed full press freedom in the preamble, its full implementation is awaited. He underlined the need of unity between the FNJ and supporters and promoters of the freedom of the press to take the movement of free expression to a new height.
