5.8-magnitude quake hits Australia's Victoria with violent shaking

SYDNEY, Sept. 22: An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 jolted Australia's state of Victoria at 9:15 a.m. local time Wednesday. Residents felt violent shaking but no serious injures were reported. The epicenter, around Mansfield in Victoria's northeast, is about 130 km away from Australia's second largest city of Melbourne. Australia's Seismology Research Center reported that preliminary readings showed the quake lasted around 20 seconds. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison who is in New York for a UN meeting said that there had been no reports of serious injuries. "They are very rare events in Australia, and as a result I'm sure people would have been quite distressed and disturbed by that, particularly in the most immediate area affected," Morrison said. Residents across metropolitan Melbourne and rural Victoria reported violent shaking. Building damage has been reported across Melbourne, and apartment buildings are being evacuated in inner Melbourne. "I felt the shaking start from upstairs. I thought someone was skipping upstairs, the shaking became stronger and stronger. The curtain pullcord started banging against the window, and gradually the whole building started shaking and making noises. At first, I thought it was the wind, but when I went out on to the balcony, I saw that there were already many people gathering in the street," Jen Qiu who lived in Metropolitan Melbourne told Xinhua. Victoria State Emergency Service tweeted, "If you have building damage or require SES assistance, phone 132500 and please be patient as lines may be busy." Victorian Emergency issued an earthquake warning, saying a number of aftershocks have occurred and can continue to occur for sometime after the main earthquake. Seismology Research Center head Adam Pascale told national broadcaster ABC that "there is a small likelihood that there could be a larger event but we'll see as we go."

Earthquake-ravaged 375 school building reconstructed

BAGMATI, August 4: As many as 375 schools out of 409 earthquake-damaged community schools in Makawanpur district have been reconstructed as of now.  According to the Makwanpur-based District Project Implementation Unit (Education) Hetauda under the National Reconstruction Authority Central Project Implementation Unit, total 1,665 classrooms of 375 schools were reconstructed in the district in the fiscal year 2020/21.  The April 2015 earthquake had completely damaged 2,310 classrooms of 409 schools out of total 516 community schools operational in the district at the time.  Chief of Hetauda-based District Project Implementation Unit (Education) Badri Pathak shared that the reconstruction of quake-damaged schools is gaining momentum in three modalities. Of the reconstructed schools, 313 were rebuilt after signing Memorandum of Understanding through school management committee, 32 reconstructed on the facilitation of different organizations and 32 rebuilt on loan assistance of Japan government and Asian Development Bank.  A informed, the devastating earthquake had caused damages to 46 government buildings, 65 health facilities and 124 temples including monasteries in the district.

President extends tributes to those killed in Gorkha quake

President Bidya Devi Bhandari has offered her tributes to those who lost their lives in the 2015 earthquake and aftershocks.   The earthquake known as Gorkha earthquake with its epicenter at Barpak in Gorkha district rattled the country on 25 April, 2015 killing around 9,000 and injuring thousands of people.  Stating that despite the quake having killed thousands of people and destroyed structures, it has failed to topple the tower of national dignity, the President in a message today said that post-quake reconstruction works initiated by the government through the National Reconstruction Authority has neared its final stage. Today commemorates the sixth anniversary of the Gorkha earthquake.  Reconstruction of many damaged public and private buildings and houses and temples and monasteries is underway and completion of important heritages like Rani Pokhari, Durbar High School, Dasharath Stadium and Dharahara is praiseworthy, she said.    She extended her thanks to those civil servants, skilled workers and donor agencies who have worked day and night under the reconstruction campaign. "We are at high risk of disasters like flooding and landslides given geographical structure and situation of the country. In view of such sensitivity, we need to build ecology friendly infrastructures and structures to cope with disasters. I want to draw the attention of the concerned authority to construct strong and quake resilient structures in line with the building code and by studying private, public and government structures."

People not building quake-resilient houses

TIKAPUR, Jan 17: Despite numerous efforts of Tikapur Municipality to build settlements with earthquake-resilient houses, the people in the municipality are found constructing their houses breaching the standard and rules set by the municipality and the government.
