The Salt Trading Corporation has started distributing up to 10 sacks of sugar each to retail traders for sale and distribution for the Tihar festival. After the consumers experienced an acute shortage of sugar on the eve of the Tihar festival, the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers took the initiative and arranged for the distribution of sugar through STC by collecting it from the sugar-producing industries.

Sugar likely to cost more than Rs 100 per kilogram in next few days

KATHMANDU, September 16: As the main festival of Nepali society, Dashain and Tihar, hovers around, the cost of sugar per kilogram is likely to be higher than Rs 100. Two main government companies - Salt Trading Corporation and Food Management and Trading Company - do not have enough sugar for this festival season in stock due to which traders are likely to hike the price as per their will. Salt Trading Corporation currently has 200 tons of Sugar in stock while the Food Management and Trading Company has no sugar in its stock. With this, traders can now hike the price of sugar on their own, fear experts. Not only the government companies but the Sugar Producer Association also does not have enough sugar in its stock. The Association currently has 6000 tons of sugar in the stock. The cost of sugar per kilogram can go as high as Rs 110, according to Brahesh Kumar Jha, Departmental Manager of the Salt Trading Corporation. Likewise, agreeing to Jha’s remark, Pabitra Bhajracharya, President of Food Management and Trading Company said that the cost of sugar per kilogram will go up in next few days and will surge during Dashain and Tihar. As of Wednesday, retailers are buying Sugar at a wholesale price of Rs 90 while the customers are paying Rs 95 for one kilogram of sugar. (With inputs from Aarthik Abhiyan)
