FNJ Province 1 to institute Rs 10 million fund for welfare programmes

ITAHARI, August 9: Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) Province 1 Committee has decided to institute a fund worth Rs 10 million for the social security of journalists of the province.  FNJ Province 1 Committee came to this decision after second full-fledged meeting of the provincial committee.  ''This fund will be used for professional journalists affected by pandemic, disasters and other varied troubles,'' informed Lawa Dev Dhungana, the Vice-President of FNJ Province 1 Committee. According to Dhungana, the name of the fund will be 'Journalist Welfare Fund, Province No. 1''.  ''We will manage the entire fund within the tenure of this committee,'' said elated Dhungana.  He said the fund would be a good welfare programme for around 1300 journalists who are member of FNJ Province No. 1 and others.  Issuing the press release of the decisions of second full meeting of FNJ Province 1 Committee, Bibek Gautam, the General Secretary, informed that four journalists have succumbed to COVID-19 in the province and 125 have been infected.  Likewise, four departments have been created namely organizational, women, inclusion and Dalit. General Secretary Bibek Gautam will lead organizational department, Vice-President Himakumari Chemjong will head women department and Secretary Santosh Yadav and working committee member PB Diyali will chair inclusion and Dalit departments respectively.  The meeting has also urged all media operators to pay pending dues of all working journalists from their respective organizations and has asked government to support startup news media outlets run by working journalists themselves.  Now, FNJ Provincial Committee will issue identity card of all members of journalists within the province that was previously issued from FNJ Central Committee, said General Secretary Gautam in the press release. Likewise, the meeting has requested all insurance companies to pay pending insurance amounts to all journalists in the province.

FNJ UK Chapter provides fellowship to journalists

LONDON, July 23: The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) UK Chapter raised fund to provide fellowship to journalists affected from the COVID-19 pandemic.  The UK Chapter of FNJ said that it collected Rs 516,000 to assist altogether 25 journalists from across the country. It is said that each journalist will be provided with Rs 20,000 in fellowship.  The fellowship amount would be given away to the awarded journalists through the FNJ central committee. As decided, the amount has already been deposited to the bank account of the FNJ central committee. A meeting of the FNJ UK Chapter held in the second week of last June had decided to assist the journalists suffering in the COVID-19 pandemic.

FNJ Myagdi chapter institutes ‘emergency fund’

MYAGDI, June : The Myagdi district chapter of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has set up an ‘emergency fund’ to help journalists in difficult time.  A meeting of the FNJ Myagdi chapter presided over by its chair Prakash Poudel on Wednesday decided to institute the fund to support journalists in natural disaster, accident, pandemic and complicated diseases.  Treasurer Amit Biswokarma informed that the fund received over Rs 100,000 from the office-bearers, members and advisors of the chapter attending the meeting on Wednesday alone.  “The fund was established by the journalists for the journalists”, chapter chair Poudel said, adding that the fund size would be gradually enlarged and support would be provided to the needy journalists from the interest of the principle amount as per the working procedure. FNJ Myagdi chapter has 62 members.

FNJ Solukhumbu to institute ‘emergency relief fund’

SOLUKHUMBU, May 31: The Solukhumbu chapter of Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) is set to institute an ‘emergency relief fund’.  A meeting of the chapter on Sunday took the decision to set up the fund, shared its chair Nutan Shrestha. According to him, the meeting also endorsed a work procedure to operate the relief fund.  The work procedure is said to cover general members of the FNJ chapter. It has also made an arrangement to provide support to its member(s) when medical treatment is required in case of accidental injury while performing their jobs as part of any media house.  Shrestha further informed that the fund can be mobilized to support journalists in case of mutilation or having complicated disease, accidental death, illness of their family members and any incident of fire and natural calamities.  He also informed that the FNJ chapter will deposit Rs 111,111 to the fund from its bank account and other options will also be explored to enlarge the fund.

FNJ, Baglung sets up Covid-19 isolation facility

GALKOT, May 3: The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) Baglung has built a Covid-19 isolation ward for its members working on the frontline amidst the increased risk of second wave of coronavirus infection.  Chapter chair Naresh Kandel said chapter’s meeting hall has been converted to a 10-bed isolation facility for the immediate use.  “Journalists are at high risk of the infection as they work on the front line during this pandemic, many journalists in the district reside in rented houses and are not in the position of observing home isolation if infected,” he added. The capacity of the facility will be expanded gradually, it is said.    As he said, five journalists who had contracted the virus have been recovered. “Though no journalist is infected at the moment, this could be happened at any time, we are aware that situation may change at any time and are being prepared accordingly.’’   The Dhaulagiri Hospital is to co-operate the FNJ chapter to operate the isolation facility with the oxygen therapy system. Hospital chief medical superintendent Dr Shailendra B Pokhrel said he was happy to see the establishment of the isolation ward for journalists on their own.  He stressed the need of ensuring more and more Covid-19 isolation facilities to cope with the potential crisis of beds in the hospital if the infection rate continues to rise in the days ahead.  Brother Surgical and Diagnostic Pvt Ltd proprietor Neelkanth Sharma has provided an electric hand sanitizer dispenser, 250 pieces of masks, five liters of hand sanitizer, pulse oxymeter, digital blood-pressure monitor and a digital thermometer for the isolation ward, according to Kandel.
