RUPANDEHI, October 22: A precious Buddha statue to be set up at the Gautam Buddha International Airport, Bhairahawa arrived here on Thursday. The statue made up of white jade has been brought at Bhairahawa Customs Office from Myanmar via Hong Kong and Kolkata port.
It is said the figurine was made at the cost of some Rs 2.50 billion and being handed over to Nepal government by the Lumbini Garden Foundation. It is being installed at the international airport, Bhairahawa.
The Malwin Group, a company relating to mines in Myanmar, had earlier given the statue to the Lumbini Garden Foundation of Spain. It weighs 1800 kg and has the height of 1.9 metre, and width of 60 cm. After making documentation, the statue is being kept at airport, taking it around Siddharthanagar Municipality, Mayadevi Rural Municipality and Lumbini Cultural Municipality.
Chamber of Industry and Commerce at Siddharthanagar, Lumbini Hotel Association and others have made grand preparation to welcome the statue. It is said such statue has been sent to various 16 countries. President Bidya Devi Bhandari is scheduled to unveil the statue on October 31. A high level delegation led by Speaker from Spain is also arriving in Nepal to attend the function.
LONDON, September 26: A statue of Kulbir Thapamagar, the first Gurkha soldier to receive the Victoria Cross 9VC in the British Army, has been unveiled. The statue, unveiled at the Princess Garden in Aldershot, was unveiled on Saturday after carrying out pooja or worshiping as per Buddhist and Hindu traditions.
The ceremony was attended by Leo Docherty, Minister of State for Defense and Veterans Affairs, Lieutenant Mani Kumar Rai, Deputy Lord of Hampshire County, Lieutenant General Ian Kev Sibi, Commander of the British Army, Home Command and Standing Joint Command, and Roshan Khanal, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Nepali Embassy.
On the occasion, a minute's silence was observed in memory of the deceased army personnel.
The statue was made by collecting donations from Nepalis and foreigners under the leadership of Greater Rasmore Naples Community. The project was launched in February 2019 with the permission of the Rasmore Borough Council, but was delayed for some time by the COVID-19 pandemic. Project Officer Gary Ghalek said it cost more than 170,000 pounds to build the statue.
The council has rented the land for 99 years at a cost of one pound a year, and the council will also maintain the statue and its premises. The statue unveiled in Aldershot is a testament to Nepalis good relations with the local community, said Wellington Councilor Jeev Belbase.
