Silence period: Ex-PM, Ministers among those defying election code of conduct

KATHMANDU, May 12: As per the election code of conduct issued by the Election Commission (EC), election campaigns are prohibited in forms during the silence period. Despite the poll body’s call, the Former Prime Minister and Ministers are found defying the election code of conduct during this period. Former Prime Minister Babu Ram Bhattarai took to the social media and urged voters to vote for his party – Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP). Using social media platforms to persuade voters and conduct election campaigns is prohibited during the silence period. Likewise, former chief minister of Gandaki Province, Prithvi Subba Gurung issued a video message where he was seen asking for votes for the CPN-UML candidates.  As per the election code of conduct, asking for votes during the silence period is against the law.  The poll body has already sought clarification from Gurung.
