Apple App Store appears to be widely removing outdated apps

Apple may be tightening down on programs that haven't received any upgrades in a long time. Apple tells impacted developers in an email titled "App Improvement Notice" that it will delete apps from the App Store if they haven't been "updated in a considerable length of time" and gives them only 30 days to do so. A number of software developers, including Robert Kabwe of Protopop Games, have expressed their displeasure with the shift. Kabwe claims on Twitter that Apple is threatening to delete Motivoto, a fully working game that hasn't been updated since March 2019. Meanwhile, Kosta Eleftheriou, the creator of the FlickType Apple Watch keyboard, claims that Apple removed a version of his program designed for the visually handicapped since it had not been updated in two years. The once-super-popular Pocket God software, as Eleftheriou notes out in his tweet, is still available on the App Store, despite the fact that it was last updated in 2015....

APPLE: Apple adds unlisted apps to its App Store

Apple will soon allow developers to offer unlisted apps through the App Store, which can only be accessed by those who have a direct connection (via MacRumors). Unlisted applications aren't searchable, App Store categories, charts, or recommendations for the general public, but they are accessible to administrators through Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager. Unlisted applications, according to Apple, are best for "restricted audiences," such as visitors at a special event, members of an organization, participants in a research project, or a small set of employees. Developers must first submit a request to Apple in order to make an app unlisted and acquire a link. Apps that have only been approved for private download on the Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager, on the other hand, require additional actions from developers. Developers must "create a new program record in App Store," upload the binaries, and then "configure the...

APPLE: App Store earned more than $200 billion since its launch

According to an Apple press statement issued, App Store developers have earned more than $260 billion since the store's inception in 2008. Since Apple said in January that developers had earned more than $200 billion since the App Store launched, the new statistic released on Monday shows that developers will earn $60 billion in 2021. Apple also stated that from Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve in 2021, spending on the App Store increased by a double-digit percentage, but it didn't say how much. While the latest figures show that the App Store is still a huge moneymaker, developer dissatisfaction with the store is at an all-time high. Many developers have expressed dissatisfaction with what they perceive to be restrictive store practices, notably Apple's 30% cut on many sales. Apple is still embroiled in a legal battle with Epic Games over the App Store, and while the Epic Games v. Apple ruling arguably favored Apple, it has been put on hold, which means Apple...

Apple Starts Legal Action against Russian Regulator in App Store Dispute: Report

Apple has filed a lawsuit against Russia's anti-monopoly regulator over alternative payment alternatives on its App Store platform, according to court documents obtained by the RIA news agency on Sunday. In late October, Russia filed an antitrust complaint against Apple, alleging that it failed to enable software developers to inform users about other payment choices while using its App Store. If proven guilty, Apple might face a fine depending on its income in Russia, according to the report. In "economic conflicts over administrative legal relations," the Moscow Arbitration Court designated Apple as a claimant and Russia's Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) as a respondent. On December 2, Apple sought that further records be submitted to the case, according to RIA. Apple did not immediately reply to a Reuters request for comment. According to Forbes Russia, the proceedings stem from a warning FAS gave on August 30 on Apple's apparent failure to advise...

Fortnite Row: Epic CEO Tim Sweeney Blasts Apple, Calls for Single App Store

Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic Games, repeated his assault on Apple and Alphabet's Google as the world's dominating mobile duopoly, before proposing a universal app store that works across all operating systems as a solution. In a Tuesday interview in Seoul, Sweeney said, "What the world truly needs now is a single store that works with all platforms." "Right present, software ownership is dispersed over the iOS App Store, the Android Google Play marketplace, various Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch storefronts, as well as the Microsoft Store and the Mac App Store." Epic is collaborating with developers and service providers to design a system that would allow consumers to "purchase software once and have it on all devices and platforms." Sweeney expressed his displeasure with the current state of smartphone software earlier in the day during remarks at the Global Conference for Mobile Application Ecosystem Fairness in South Korea, which...
