Local-level elections can’t be delayed: UML leader Kharel

KATHMANDU, Jan 25: Standing committee member of the main opposition CPN -UML Agni Kharel said that the five-year term of local government can not be delayed by a single day as it is determined by the constitution. In a press meet organized at Birtamod of Jhapa on Tuesday, Kharel said that the UML would not tolerate any attempts to delay the local level elections by ‘violating the constitution'.  Also the former Law Minister, Kharel said further,  “The election that should be held in May cannot be deferred for  December. This is the local government, not the local body. The constitution has clearly mentioned a five-year term of the local government.” He accused the government of making preparations not to hold local-level elections and intending to push the country toward the situation of uncertainty in the absence of people’s representatives.  Kharel expressed the view that the five-year term of local-level could not be extended by a single day and it would not be possible to keep the local-level without people’s representatives even a single day. He blamed that ‘early election’ or three-tier election at the same time means a plan not to hold an election.
