UML 10th National Congress: Voting for new leadership ends

KATHMANDU, November 30: Voting for various positions including Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the main opposition party, the CPN-UML, has ended. The voting period was scheduled to end at 10 AM on Tuesday but was later extended by 30 minutes. The voting ended at 10:30 AM, according to Yogesh Bhattarai, Chief of the Publicity Department of the party. Leaders KP Sharma Oli and Bhim Rawal are vying for the post of Chairman while leaders Subash Chandra Nembang, Ghanashyam Bhusal, Asta Laxmi Shakya, Bishnu Poudel, Surendra Pandey and Yubaraj Gwayali are vying for the post of party’s Vice-Chairman. Likewise, leaders Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, Ragubir Mahaseth, Chabilal Biswakarma, Lekraj Bhatta, Yogesh Bhattarai, Gokarna Bista and Padma Aryal are competing for the post of party secretary.

2,096 votes cast, total expenses of convention stand at Rs 90 million

KATHMANDU, November 30: As many as 2,0864votes have been casted during an election held to elect new leadership in the main opposition party, the CPN-UML, under its 10th General Convention. “Of 2,153 votes, 2,096 votes have been casted,” said Babu Ram Dahal, member of Election Commission of the party. The party held its 10th National Congress from November 26 which was earlier scheduled to end in two days but was later extended for two more days after KP Oli failed to forge consensus for election in the party.  According to Sher Bahadur Tamang, secretary at the central office of the party, the total expenses of the convention was 90 million rupees. Leaders KP Sharma Oli and Bhim Rawal are vying for the post of Chairman while leaders Subash Chandra Nembang, Ghanashyam Bhusal, Asta Laxmi Shakya, Bishnu Poudel, Surendra Pandey and Yubaraj Gwayali are vying for the post of party’s Vice-Chairman. Likewise, leaders Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, Ragubir Mahaseth, Chabilal Biswakarma, Lekraj Bhatta, Yogesh Bhattarai, Gokarna Bista and Padma Aryal are competing for the post of party secretary.

UML Gen Convention: Voting begins

CHITWAN: Voting for the various positions of the CPN-UML has kicked off at the closed-session hall in Sauraha, Chitwan.  The voting, which was scheduled to begin at 2  AM, Tuesday, began two hours later around 4 AM.  Challenging the list of office bearers proposed by Chairman Olii, leaders including Bhim Rawal, Ghanashyam Bhusal, Bhim Acharya and Tanka Karki are contesting elections for various key positions.  Earlier on Monday early morning, Oli tabled the names of 19 office bearers including his name as the party chairman. He, however, has been challenged by Bhim Rawal. Rawal was elected party’s vice chairman in the Ninth General Convention.   Ishwar Pokharel, who was proposed as the senior vice chairman, was elected unopposed.  Oli proposed the names of Yubraj Gyawali, Ashta Laxmi Shakya, Surendra Pandey, Ram Bahadur Thapa, Bishnu Poudel and Subash Nembang for six vice chairmen. Leader Bhusal, whose name was not included in the list, registered his candidacy for the same position.  Similarly, the party elected Shakhar Pokharel as general secretary and leaders trio Pradeep Gyawali, Prithvi Subba Gurung and Bishnu Rimal as the deputy general secretaries unanimously.  Two other leaders --- Bhim Acharya and Tanka Karki ---, who did not find their names in Oli’s list, filed their candidacy for secretarial positions. UML will elect seven secretaries from among nine candidates.  Those proposed as the secretaries include Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, Raghubir Mahaseth, Chhabilal Bishwakarma, Yogesh Bhattarai, Gokarna Bista and Padma Aryal.

UML’s second-rung leaders making final attempts to save party unity

KATHMANDU, July 17: Second-rung leaders of the CPN-UML have resumed their talk in a bid to save the party unity.  The leaders are holding a meeting at the UML parliamentary party office in Singha Durbar to forge consensus and keep party unity intact. According to a source, most members of the 10-member task force, which the UML Standing Committee meeting dissolved on Friday, joined the meeting.   The task force comprised Bhim Rawal, Ghanashyam Bhusal, Surendra Pandey, Raghuji Pant and Gorkarna Bista from the senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal side while Subash Chandra Nemang, Bishnu Poudel, Pradeep Gyawali, Shankar Pokharel and Bishnu Rimal represented Chairman KP Sharma Oli faction. UML secretaries Prithvi Subba Gurung, Yogesh Bhattarai and Bhim Acharya also joined Saturday’s meeting.  The leaders are reportedly holding consultations as party witnesses issues over the implementation of the 10-point deal finalized by the taskforce on July 12.

UML task force dissolved, lawmakers instructed to stand against Deuba govt

KATHMANDU, July 16: The CPN-UML has dissolved a ten-member task force, which was formed to 'sort out differences in the party'. A Standing Committee meeting held on Friday afternoon took the decision in this regard, said Pradeep Gyawali, spokesperson for the party. The task force, formed on May 16, comprised Bhim Rawal, Ghanashyam Bhusal, Surendra Pandey, Raghuji Pant and Gorkarna Bista from the senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal side while Subash Chandra Nemang, Bishnu Poudel, Pradeep Gyawali, Shankar Pokharel and Bishnu Rimal represented Chairman KP Sharma Oli faction.  Meanwhile, the party also instructed all its lawmakers to stand against the recently formed government led by Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba. The meeting also appreciated the outgoing KP Sharma Oli-led government for its 'historical' performances.

Surya Thapa, press advisor to the Prime Minister informed The Rising Nepal that the party had decided to suspend leaders Surendra Pandey and Ghanashyam Bhusal for six months.

UML row: Oli, Nepal meeting ends inconclusively

KATHMANDU, July 8: The meeting between CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli and senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal ended inclusively.  The two-hour meeting held at Hotel Marriott in Naxal, Kathmandu  on Wednesday evening could not reach any conclusion as Chairman Oli was not ready for a ‘power-sharing’ deal.  While the Nepal faction is seeking a graceful unity and agreement in a package, the Oli faction say that they will not sign any deal as they had already ‘revived the party organization as it was on My 16, 2018’.  During the meeting, the two leaders were also briefed about the progress made so far by the task force formed to resolve the dispute through a dialogue. The two leaders also had a one-to-one meeting. Talking to reporters, UML Vice-chair Dr Bhim Bahadur Rawal said serious deliberations were held on giving a productive outcome for the party unity. The discussion will continue both at the senior leaders' level and in the task force, he said. In addition to Dr Rawal, UML General Secretary Iswar Pokharel, PP deputy leader Subas Chandra Nembang, deputy general secretary Bishnu Prasad Poudel and standing committee member Surendra Pandey were also present at the meeting. The taskforce members include party leaders, Subas Chandra Nembang, Bishnu Prasad Poudel, Pradeep Kumar Gyawali, Shankar Pokharel and Bishnu Prasad Rimal from the side of Prime Minister and party chair Oli and Dr Bhim Bahadur Rawal, Ghanashyam Bhusal, Surendra Prasad Pandey, Gokarna Raj Bista and Raghuji Pant from party leader Nepal camp.

Oli, Nepal form 10-member task force to settle intraparty disputes

KATHMANDU, May 16: Prime Minister and Chairman of ruling CPN-UML KP Sharma Oli and party’s senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal on Sunday formed a ten-member task force to settle intra-party disputes. A one-on-one meeting between Oli and Nepal, that took place at Singha Durbar, formed the task force, including five leaders each from both sides.  Leader Nepal speaking to media persons after the meeting said that Bhim Rawal will lead his side. The other members from his side include Ghanashyam Bhusal, Surendra Pandey, Raghuji Pant and Gorkarna Bista. Similarly, an Oli-faction, which comprises  Bishnu Poudel, Pradeep Gywali, Shankar Pokharel and Bishnu Rimal led by Subash Nemang.  A meeting of the leaders of both the sides on Friday evening had entrusted Oli and Nepal to pick the members of the task force to sort out things and resurrect the party as it was on May 16, 2018. The panel is required to submit its report within three days.
