NBA to resume protest against CJ Rana from Sunday

KATHMANDU, Feb 13: The Nepal Bar Association ( NBA) is resuming the protest against the Chief Justice  (CJ) Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana from Sunday. Prior to this, the NBA had been staging protests virtually owing to COVID-19 transmission. According to Lilamani Poudel, general secretary of the Association, the protest will continue in the physical presence of NBA members everyday beginning from February 13. “The protest will be staged from 11 AM to 12 noon,” he added. For the past 107 days, the NBA has been staging protests at the Supreme Court demanding implementation of Justice Hari Krishna Karki’s Report and resignation of CJ Rana.

Vote count for NC general secy over, Thapa secures 64 pc votes

KATHMANDU: Vote count for the general secretary of the ruling Nepali Congress (NC) has been over.  According to the party’s election committee, Gagan Thapa secured the highest of 3,023 votes among the six candidates. Thapa was fielded as the candidate by the Shekhar Koirala panel. Koirala, however, lost the two rounds of presidential elections to Sher Bahadur Deuba.  Bishwo Prakash Sharma has also been elected one of two general secretaries securing a total of 1,984 votes. Sharma, who is also the party spokesperson, contested the election on behalf of the Prakash Man Singh panel.  Both the candidates from the Deuba panel --- Prakash Sharan Mahat and Pradeep Poudel --- however, lost the election. While Mahat secured 1,556 votes, Poudel got the fourth highest votes of 1,393.  Minendra Rijal, the candidate fielded by the Koirala panel, also lost the race. He got 809 votes against Raja Ram Karki’s 106. Karki belongs to the Bimalendra Nidhi camp.  Meanwhile, Rijal announced his resignation as the Minister for Defence following the preliminary vote count results.

Defence Minister Rijal to resign amid apparent loss in NC's general secy

KATHMANDU: Amid the apparent loss in the race for general secretary of the ruling Nepali Congress (NC), Defence Minister Minendra Rijal has announced his resignation as the member of the Sher Bahadur Deuba-led Cabinet.  Taking to Twitter on Thursday afternoon, Rijal said that he decided to step down as the minister keeping in view the preliminary results. “I’d tender my resignation to the prime ministers once the final result is announced,” he wrote further.  नेपाली काङ्ग्रेसको चौधौं महाधिवेशनमा मैले प्रतिस्पर्धा गरेको महामन्त्री पदको प्रारम्भिक परिणामबाट नै स्पष्टरूपमा प्राप्त सन्देशलाई दृष्टिगत गर्दै रक्षामन्त्रीको पदबाट राजीनामा दिने निर्णय लिएको छु। अन्तिम परिणाम प्राप्त हुनासाथ सम्माननीय प्रधानमन्त्रीसमक्ष राजीनामा पेश गर्नेछु। — Minendra Rijal (@MinendraRijal) December 16, 2021 According to the vote-count tally Rijal, one of two candidates fielded by the Shekhar Koirala panel has secured 365 votes out of 2,120 votes tallied.  Gagan Thapa and Bishwo Prakash Sharma are leading the vote count for the two general secretarial positions of the Nepali Congress (NC). Nepal Bar Association to bar CJ from entering SC

KATHMANDU, November 12: The Nepal Bar Association (NBA) has announced bar the Chief Justice (CJ) Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana from entering the Supreme Court on Friday. “The bar won’t let (CJ) Rana enter the apex court today,” said Lilamani Poudel, the general secretary of the NBA. “Advocates are scheduled to gather at the SC at around 9: 30 AM in this regard,” Poudel added. The NBA is scheduled to stage a sit-in protest at the main gate of the apex court to avoid CJ Rana from entering the court. Meanwhile, the apex court is likely to bar advocates from staging a sit-in protest at the main gate of the apex court. As many as six advocates were injured on Thursday in the clash with security personnel at the SC. The NBA has been staging protests demanding the resignation of CJ Rana, accusing Rana of demanding his share in the Cabinet.
