Dr Poudel declares candidacy for NRNA’s general secretary

KATHMANDU, September 8: Aspiring candidates for leadership have stepped up their preparation in view of the election of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA0 – the largest and significant umbrella organization of Nepali immigrants and Diaspora – scheduled for coming October 23-25.  Candidates have declared their candidacies for different positions and also ramped up their electoral campaigns ahead of the 10th general convention scheduled to take place next month.  In this connection, former President of NRNA US Chapter Dr Keshab Poudel is making necessary preparation to file candidacy for the post of general-secretary of NRNA. The general-secretary is an important portfolio in NRNA. The US is the country having highest number of NRNA delegates, it is informed.  Mostly popular and mild in nature, Dr Poudel said he is declaring his candidacy this time for the post of general-secretary for the institutional development of the global organization. He told RSS that he is vying for the post to materialize the agenda of developing NRNA a systematic and transparent organization.  He has been residing in the US for over 17 years being professionally engaged in medical field. Involved in NRNA since 2013, he had served as an advisor to NRNA US from 2013-15, NRNA US President twice from 2017-19 and chief patron of NRNA US Chapter from 2019-21.  Dr Poudel has also been active in medical profession in Nepal through Green City Hospital. He is mostly known as a specialist of Internal Medicine. He had played a lead role in providing health materials and appliances worth amounting over tens of millions rupees to the Government of Nepal from the US for the treatment and prevention of present pandemic of COVID-19.  Beside involvement in medical sector, Dr Poudel has also his investment in hotel enterprises in the US.  Aspiring candidates have declared their candidacies for different positions in the virtual election to be held in the run-up of NRNA ICC on October 23-25. As many as 3,600 delegates from 65 countries are taking part in the virtual event.

NC Gen Convention: Gagan Thapa files candidacy for general secretary

KATHMANDU: Gagan Kumar Thapa, a key leader of the ruling Nepali Congress (NC), filed his candidacy for the position of general secretary on Saturday.  Thapa, who had lost the electoral race for the same post in the 12th General Convention to Shashank Koirala, has been fielded as one of two candidates for the general secretarial position from the Shekhar Koirala panel. Minendra Rijal is another candidate for the position from the Koirala panel.

Karnali Province Chief Minister Jeevan Bahadur Shahi has announced his candidacy for the post of Nepali Congress joint-general secretary in the party’s upcoming 14th General Convention.   CM Shahi, who is also the NC central member,  said that he would compete for the post in the quota allocated for backward regions.  As Shahi's personal secretary Raj Rokaya said, the CM would be filing his candidacy for the joint- general secretary post. Shahi, who represents Humla in the Karnali Province Assembly, also served as the Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation; and the Minister for Water Supplies in the federal government.  He said he was confident that the General Convention would trust him to be at the post of joint- general secretary recognizing his contribution in beginning the culture of the existing power alliance from Karnali though the party has just six seats in the Province Assembly.

Mainali yet again elected CPN-ML’s general secretary

CP Mainali has been reelected to the post of general secretary of the CPN-ML yet again.  The closed session of the 8th general convention of the party elected a 59-member central committee including Mainali to the post. The general convention that commenced on November 13 amended the party statute and increased the central committee members to 81. The central committee meeting to be convened in January next year will delegate responsibilities to other officer-bearers, shared central member Dinanath Ghimire. The general convention assessed that the British-style parliamentary system failed in Nepal and such a system should be scrapped. The Prime Minister should be directly elected with executive powers and provide for a constitutional Head of State, the party upheld the new ideals. Similarly, the prime minister be elected directly and the council of ministers should not exceed 15 members, the party statute demanded. "The parliamentarian should not be ordained minister," added Ghimire.  Furthermore, the parliamentary elections should be fully proportional and provinces be scrapped implementing the Nepali model of federalism, the party statute upholds. Newly reelected general-secretary Mainali said that CPN (ML) will be made a people's party and works will be undertaken to meet the aspirations of the public and country.
