Inspired South Africa win series with seven-wicket victory over India

BOLAND PARK: South Africa eased to a comfortable win in the second ODI against India to add a richly-deserved 50-over series triumph to their victory in the Test series against the tourists. Some outstanding spin bowling from Tabraiz Shamsi, Keshav Maharaj and Aiden Markram helped restrict India to 287/6 in the first innings, despite a typically vibrant 85 from Rishabh Pant seemingly having set the away side up for a far bigger total. Quinton de Kock set the standard in the chase with an early salvo that put the Proteas ahead of the required rate, with each of the South African top five contributing as they reached the target with 11 balls remaining. Set a target of 288 to win the match and the series, De Kock got things off to a blistering start, racing to 20 off just 10 balls as Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s first over (the second of the innings) was slammed for 16 runs. De Kock raced to his half-century having faced just 36 deliveries and, with Janneman Malan keeping things steady at the other end, the opening pair put on 132 for the first wicket to break the back of the chase. India very nearly missed the opportunity to remove De Kock, with both KL Rahul and Pant taking some convincing to review an LBW shout when the left-hander missed a full toss from Shardul Thakur. But they did gamble on the review and the decision was overturned, sending De Kock back to the pavilion for a match-defining 78 off 66. Temba Bavuma kept the momentum going, scoring at a run-a-ball for his 35 before sending a leading edge back to Yuzvendra Chahal. And Malan fell nine runs short of his century when the excellent Jasprit Bumrah returned to the attack and castled the opener’s stumps with a beauty. South Africa still required 74 to win when Malan was sent packing, but had more than 14 overs in which to do so, and Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen made it look easy with a calm partnership that saw the Proteas across the line without the loss of a further wicket. Both Markram and Van der Dussen finished unbeaten on 37, wrapping up a seven-wicket victory to win the series. South Africa are 2-0 up with one to play Earlier India had won the toss and opted to bat first in Paarl, and it looked like a good decision as Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan put on a composed 63 for the first wicket. The loss of two quick-fire wickets – Dhawan for 29 and Virat Kohli for a five-ball duck – slowed India’s progress temporarily, but Pant soon picked the momentum up with a wonderful knock from number four. Pant was in great form in Paarl With Rahul playing the anchor role at one end, Pant let fly, with the pair putting on 115 runs for the third wicket before Rahul fell for a steady 55. The tourists looked set to rack up a big score with their in-form keeper at the crease, but Shamsi picked up the big wicket to send Pant packing for an 85 that featured 10 fours and a six. And the spinner picked up his second soon after as Shreyas Iyer fell for 11. De Kock was influential in both innings India still had their eye on a big total, but a silky piece of wicketkeeping from De Kock did for Venkatesh Iyer, and the Proteas kept control of the rate as India added just 104 runs in the final 17.3 overs. Shardul Thakur (40*) and Ravichandran Ashwin (25*) both finished unbeaten, but the total seemed short at the time and so it proved, with South Africa making the chase look easy to secure a famous series win. The final match of the series will be held in Cape Town on 23 January.

India hammer Namibia to bow out of World Cup in style

India beat Namibia by nine wickets in the final match of the Super 12 stage at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021. India ended their World Cup on a high with a crushing nine-wicket win over Namibia in the final Super 12 game of the tournament. Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin did much of the damage with the ball after Virat Kohli had won the toss in his final match as T20I captain, with the pair taking three wickets apiece to restrict Namibia to 132/8. And half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul helped India reach their target with 28 balls to spare to give departing head coach Ravi Shastri a winning send-off. Both teams knew there was no chance of reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup, with the tournament’s final four already confirmed as Pakistan, England, New Zealand and Australia. But that didn’t prevent a high-quality game in Dubai, with India showing their quality against a Namibia side who have impressed throughout the past three weeks. Spin twins take control Earlier, openers Stephan Baard and Michael van Lingen had got Namibia off and running with an opening stand of 33, before van Lingen fell in the fifth over to Jasprit Bumrah. The introduction of Jadeja helped India take back control as the spinner took a wicket in each of his first two overs to remove first Baard for a run-a-ball 21 and then Craig Williams for a duck. And Ashwin kept the momentum going when he lured Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton into a risky cut that he edged straight to slip, with Namibia restricted to 51/4 at the midway point of the innings. Namibia struggle to get going Captain Gerhard Erasmus and dangerman David Wiese looked to rebuild the innings through the middle overs, with Erasmus falling for a restrained 12 off 20 to Ashwin. And the Jadeja-Ashwin double act continued to tie Namibia down, with both picking up further wickets to keep the power-hitting middle order from doing any damage, Jadeja accounting for JJ Smit and Ashwin brilliantly bowling Zane Green. The pair finished with combined figures of 6/36 off their eight overs. Bumrah returned at the death to account for Wiese just as he prepared to unleash, the allrounder falling for 26 off 25. But some big hits from Ruben Trumpelmann in the final over helped Namibia to a respectable 132/8 at the interval. India’s dominant reply The Rahul and Rohit opening partnership crunched into the Namibia attack through the Powerplay, with Sharma dominating the strike and the scoring, racing to his half-century in just 31 balls. But Sharma's stunning knock did come to an end in the penultimate ball of the tenth over when he top-edged a catch off Jan Frylinck that was taken by the keeper. Yet Suryakumar Yadav, promoted to number three, simply kept the scoreboard ticking over with a classy 25* off 19. And Rahul followed in his opening partner’s footsteps by bringing up a 50 of his own, his third of the tournament, reaching the landmark in just 35 balls before hitting the winning runs to finish unbeaten on 54. World Cup swansong India's hammerings of Afghanistan, Scotland and now Namibia weren't enough to make amends for the early losses to Pakistan and New Zealand, as Virat Kohli's tenure as skipper ended at the Super 12 stage But the all-around quality of Monday’s display suggested that India’s T20 squad, who will be led by Rahul Dravid in place of the departing coach Shastri, will be among the favourites for the next World Cup in Australia in a year’s time. Joining India in Australia in 2022 will be Namibia, who showed good qualities again in Dubai, but ultimately falling short against one of the stronger outfits at the tournament. However the African nation’s World Cup was already a success following their progression from Round 1, which gave them the opportunity to face the best in the Super 12 as well as guaranteeing their qualification for the next ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. And, on the evidence of their showing in the UAE and Oman, the future is bright for Namibia’s T20I side.

T20 World Cup thriller: India clashes with Pakistan

KATHMANDU, October 23: The world cricket community is all set to witness one of the much-anticipated T20 World Cup clashes between India and Pakistan, scheduled to take place on Sunday. India have won all its matches against Pakistan in the World Cup- both in ODI and T20 formats. The two teams last met in the 2019 ODI World Cup in England and India last hosted Pakistan in a bilateral series in 2013.  The question here is, who will win on Sunday? Will Indian skipper Virat Kohli open the campaign on a winning note? Or will Pakistan captain Babar Azam end the losing streak? The stats are favouring India as Men in Blue have beaten Pakistan in all of their 12 matches at the T20 and 50-over World Cups.  With two-time World Cup-winning skipper MS Dhoni as the mentor of the team in World Cup 2021, the chances of Virat Kohli & Co. are higher to win the marquee clash. In the Indian dressing room, the morale will be boosted with the presence of Dhoni, who led India to the inaugural T20 World Cup win in 2007.  However, one can't ignore Pakistan's form as they come into the Super 12s contest with 10 wins in a row in the United Arab Emirates. For the team, the skipper himself is in top form with two T20 centuries this year. Bowlers like Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hasan Ali can trouble any opposition.  Overall, India held a 7-1 advantage in the shortest format as Pakistan's only win came in a bilateral series which ended 1-1. But the result of India vs Pakistan on October 24 will be a new chapter in the career of Azam and Kohli.  Kohli has already announced that he will give up the India Twenty20 captaincy after the World Cup, so winning the title and the clash against Pakistan will be of huge significance. On the other hand, Sunday is an opportunity for Babar Azam to script history.  (with inputs from agencies)

Nepal lose to India, still in comfortable position

KATHMANDU: Nepal lost to India but are still in good position to secure their place in the final of the SAFF Championship. Indian skipper Sunil Chhetri scored the only goal of the game in the 82nd minute to give the much needed win for India. Nepal are top with six points from three games, level on points with second-placed Maldives, and play their final group game against fourth-placed Bangladesh on four points. India, with five points, take on Maldives with all four teams still in contention for the top two spots. With India needing to secure a win to make their life easy for the finals, Nepal held firm in their own half and were happy to prevent them from scoring. Nepal had few chances in the game while India wasted those which fell to them. Chhetri's shot in the 21st minute was saved by Kiran Kumar Limbu and his header from a corner three minutes later sailed over the bar. Tej Tamang's cross in the 41st minute was cleared by Shubhasish Bose. In the second half, India further stepped up the pressure on Nepal with Yasir Mohammad's shot after a good spell of run was comfortably saved by Limbu. The closest they came to breaking the deadlock was in the 58th minute when Manvir Singh headed Yasir's cross but saw it saved by Limbu. Shubhasish headed straight to Limbu after the ball came off after Chhetri could not time his header instead hitting his shoulder in the 77th minute. Chhetri finally scored in the 82nd minute when Farukh Chaudhary's flicked his header into Chhetri's path who took this opportunity with his left-footed shot from inside the six yard box. Nepal began to attack after going behind but with India holding firm, ran out of time to find the equalizer. Nepal and Maldives now need at least a point to reach the final while Bangladesh and India both have to win.
