Pfizer says its vaccine booster restores full protection against COVID-19

WASHINGTON, Oct. 22: Pfizer and BioNTech announced Thursday that a large-scale trial of their COVID-19 vaccine booster showed it restored full protection against the disease. In a Phase 3 randomized, controlled trial, a Pfizer-BioNTech booster dose was administered to more than 10,000 individuals 16 years of age and older, who previously received the Pfizer-BioNTech primary two-dose series. It showed a relative vaccine efficacy of 95.6 percent when compared to those who did not receive a booster. These are the first efficacy results from any randomized, controlled COVID-19 vaccine booster trial. "These results provide further evidence of the benefits of boosters as we aim to keep people well-protected against this disease," said Albert Bourla, Pfizer chairman and chief executive officer. Last month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized the booster shots for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, allowing a single booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine be administered at least 6 months after completion of the primary series to individuals 65 years of age and older, and 18 through 64 years of age with frequent institutional or occupational exposure to SARS-CoV-2.

3rd COVID-19 vaccine dose boosts immunity tenfold: Israeli study

JERUSALEM, September 17: The third vaccine dose against COVID-19 increases the immune protection from infection tenfold, the Israeli Ministry of Health said on Thursday. The ministry said that a new Israeli study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, examined the effectiveness of the third dose among those over the age of 60, who received the booster shot in August. The tenfold protection is compared to those who received only two doses at least five months ago. The study was conducted by a team of multidisciplinary researchers from the health ministry, the Weizmann Institute of Science, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Technion, the Sheba Medical Center and the KI Research Institute, it said. "The data from Israel indicate high efficacy of Pfizer's third booster dose in preventing COVID-19 infection and serious illness," the ministry noted. Israel began vaccinating its population with the third vaccine dose on Aug. 1, as the Delta variant was spreading in the country and the effectiveness of the first two doses eroded. To date, nearly 3 million Israelis have received the third jab. The researchers found that 12 days after receiving the third shot, the rate of infections was more than 10 times lower among those who received the booster shot than those did not. This means that if the chance of those vaccinated with two doses to get infected with the Delta variant is about 50 percent compared to the unvaccinated, a booster dose lowers the risk to 5 percent, or raises the immune defense to 95 percent, the researchers concluded.

AstraZeneca vaccine to be administered as alternative to Covishield

KATHMANDU, June 7: The government is  preparing to administer the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine as an alternative to the booster dose the Covishield vaccine. The government ‘s decision comes after the Serum Institute of India, the manufacturing company of Covishield vaccine and the COVAX Facility expressed inability to supply additional quantities of Covishield vaccines to Nepal for the time being.  The Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP) is planning to administer the AstraZeneca vaccine for those waiting for the booster shot of Covishield as both vaccines are similar in nature and composition. Director of Family Welfare Division, Department of Health Services, Dr Taranath Pokhrel said that  AstraZeneca will be provided  to those receiving the first jab of Covishield as both vaccines were developed by the same company being based on the same formula and methodology and it would make no difference in giving the AstraZeneca as an alternative to the Covishield. The vaccination schedule is yet to be fixed. The booster or second dose is to be taken after 12-16 weeks of getting the first shot.   \Around 1.4 million people above 65 years of age were provided the first shot of Covishield from 7th March to  23rd March.  They are waiting for the final shot as the Serum Institute of India expressed its inability to supply one million doses of vaccines that Nepal had procured from the company for the time being in view of the increasing infections rate in India.  So far in Nepal, the number of the population receiving the first shot of COVID-19 jab stands at 2.13 million while 691,184 have received the full course. The government is administering the China –manufactured Vero Cell to the people from 60-64 age group from tomorrow, Tuesday.
