Spain into Euro 2020 quarterfinals after thrilling extra-time 5-3 victory over Croatia

COPENHAGEN, June 28: What a dramatic evening and what a thrilling game! Luis Enrique's Spanish side held nerve after Croatia netted two goals in the closing period for a 3-3 draw in regular time, hitting another two in the extra time to secure the 5-3 victory and reach the European Championships quarterfinals on Monday. Alvaro Morata slotted home in the 100th minute to put Spain in front again before Mikel Oyarzabal sealed the match 5-3 three minutes later. "When you're winning 3-1 with 10 minutes to go it's something you need to learn from," said Enrique. "We don't have that much international experience in the squad and perhaps those sorts of mistakes are inevitable." The 2018 World Cup runners-up fought back from 3-1 down in the 85th minute as goals from substitutes Mislav Orsic and Mario Pasalic temporarily saved the team and pulled the match into the extra time. But the drama of the match has begun earlier, Spain's goalkeeper Unai Simon committed a bizarre mistake early in the first half as he didn't look at the ball when Pedri passed back from 40 yards out, only to see the ball find its way into the net to give Croatia the lead. "Unai gave a lesson to kids everywhere," Enrique said. "Football is made up of errors and his reaction - making great saves - was an example of why we have such confidence in him." It was the ninth own goal in this year's Euro, which has equaled the tally of all the previous editions since 1960. Pablo Sarabia leveled the score in the 38th minute, while Cesar Azpilicueta scored his first international goal to help the Spaniards move ahead before Ferran Torres made it 3-1 in the 76th minute. But it was Morata - the man who has suffered a torrent of online abuse and even death threats after his poor performance in the group stage - that became the decisive player of the match. The Juventus forward controlled a cross with one deft touch and then sent a rising shot past goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic for his second goal of the tournament. Having netted three times in Euro 2016, the 28-year-old has become Spain's joint-highest scorer in the competition along with Fernando Torres. "I don't think there's any coach in the world who wouldn't admire a player like Morata," said Enrique, who gave Morata strong support despite the critics. "He dominates in the air, he scores goals, he is physically powerful. He is a striker we should really value." Spain will next face the winners between France and Switzerland, who have drawn 3-3 in regular time and are to play the extra time.

Italy march 2-1 past Belgium into Euro 2020 semifinals

MUNICH , July 2: Relentless Italians scored twice in the first half and advanced past Belgium 2-1 in an intense see-saw Euro 2020 quarterfinal encounter in the Football Arena Munich on Friday. The Red Devils started brightly into the game and reaped their first chance with less than a minute played as Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma had to defuse a dangerous attack from Romelu Lukaku. Belgium were the more active team in the opening stages, yet Italy thought they had opened the scoring with their first chance, but Leonardo Bonucci's goal was ruled offside by the video assistant referee with 13 minutes gone. At the other end of the pitch, Donnarumma had to be on guard to deny Kevin De Bruyne's promising strike on goal nine minutes later. Both teams posed threat when they attacked and it was eventually Italy, who broke the deadlock as Belgium failed to clear the ball from their area allowing Nicolo Barella to slot home after shrugging off three defenders at the half hour mark. The Squadra Azzurra picked up the pace and made it two on the scoreboards after Lorenzo Insigne gave the ball a couple of touches before smashing it past hapless goalie Thibaut Courtois with two minutes remaining in the first half. Belgium sparked to life just before the half time whistle as Italy defender Giovanni di Lorenzo felled Jeremy Doku inside the box to cause a foul play penalty. Lukaku stepped up and made no mistake to halve the deficit. After the restart, Italy continued on the front foot while Belgium lacked in penetration and ideas. Belgium had to wait until the hour mark to create their next clear-cut opportunity, but Lukaku and Thorgan Hazard missed Nacer Chadli's sweeping cross to the far post. Robert Martinez' side increased the pressure but couldn't do much damage to Italy's bulwark. Belgium's golden and last chance came in the closing stages when Doku pulled a long-range effort just over the crossbar. With the result, Italy progress into the semifinals where they will clash with Spain in Wembley on Tuesday. "I don't think we suffered too much in any moment of the game. To beat a team like Belgium you need a great performance by everybody, and this is exactly what happened today," Italy head coach Roberto Mancini said. "It hits hard. We had two opportunities, but their keeper made a good save and I think we gave the first goal away a bit to easily. It really could have gone either way, but Italy deserved to win here," Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois said. (Xinhua)

Switzerland knock world champions France out of Euro 2020 in penalty shoot-out

BUCHAREST, June 28: Switzerland knocked world champions France out of Euro 2020 in 5-4 penalty shoot-out win following a thrilling 3-3 draw after extra time, reaching the quarterfinals on Monday. Switzerland's goalkeeper Yann Sommer denied French striker Kylian Mbappe's spot kick to earn his side the victory. Switzerland will next play against Spain, which beat Croatia 5-3 after extra time, in St. Petersburg on Friday. Both teams were perfect from the penalty spot until Mbappe stepped up to take the last of France's five scheduled kicks, but Sommer dived to his right and got a strong hand to the striker's effort, swatting it away to send the Swiss through. Mario Gavranovic's 90th-minute strike allowed Switzerland to take France to extra time at Euro 2020 as the last-16 tie in Bucharest ended 3-3 after 90 minutes. Haris Seferovic gave the Swiss a half-time lead in the Romanian capital but Hugo Lloris saved a Ricardo Rodriguez penalty early in the second half before a Karim Benzema double turned the game on its head. A stunning Paul Pogba strike then had the world champions 3-1 ahead but Seferovic scored again to reduce the deficit before substitute Gavranovic equalized. It was the third game in the round of last 16 to go to extra time but the first to be decided by penalties. (Xinhua)

Germany outplay Portugal, France tie with Hungary at Euro 2020

LONDON, June 19: Germany came from behind to stun defending champions Portugal 4-2 while France were held to a 1-1 tie by Hungary in the Euro 2020 second-round encounters of Group F on Saturday. In Munich, Germany need a rebound in urgent as they lost their opening match against France 1-0 last Tuesday, but fell behind first when Diogo Jota's square pass allowed Christian Ronaldo to finish the job from close range after 15 minutes. The hosts needed some time to find their rhythm but once the Germans gained momentum, they forced Portugal to make two own goals as Ruben Dias and Raphael Guerreiro helped Germany to take the 2-1 lead before the break. Kai Havertz and Robin Gosens added two goals within 15 minutes after the interval. Ronaldo set up Jota to pull one back in the 67th minute, but the defending champions could not avoid a loss in front of a rejuvenated Germany. The result means that both Germany and Portugal have three points in hand, one point behind group leaders France, who were forced to tie with Hungary. Hungary, beaten by Portugal 3-0 in the first round, produced a brave defensive performance on home soil. France was guilty of missing chances in the first half, with Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema especially guilty and Attila Fiola making them pay for their profligacy when he scored on a rare Hungarian break in first-half injury time. Antoine Griezmann levelled up from the heart of the box in the 65th minute, but despite keeping the pressure on as the Hungarians were visibly tired, France was unable to find a winner, thanks partly to Hungarian goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi. In the group's last-round matches next Wednesday, Germany will host Hungary while Portugal will face the World Cup champions France in Budapest. In the last match Saturday evening, Spain and Poland drew 1-1 with Robert Lewandowski's second half header cancelling out Alvaro Morata's opener for Spain. The result leaves Spain with two points from their first two matches in Group E and the Poles with just one and both probably need to win their last group games to avoid an early exit. Sweden lead Group E with four points while Slovakia follow behind with three points thanks to a win over Poland. Spain will host Slovakia next Wednesday when Sweden and Poland are scheduled to play in St Petersburg.  (Xinhua)
