KATHMANDU, June 23: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has urged its residents to segregate ( separate degradable and non-degradable) waste materials at the source before disposing of it.
The metropolis has also informed its residents that the KMC will collect degradable and non-degradable wastes separately from the next month.
The local body has also made it clear that the metropolis will not collect those waste materials that are not segregated at the source and will fine Rs 500 each time while collecting the wastes if residents are found disposing of unsegregated wastes.
Waste segregation at source is critical to its recycling and disposal. Lack of segregation, collection and transportation of unsegregated mixed waste to the landfills has an impact on the environment. When we segregate waste, it reduces the amount of waste that reaches landfills, thereby taking up less space.
KMC believes that if waste is managed by the people who produce it, the city won't have a waste problem.
