Number of mobile banking users in Nepal surpasses 17,600,000

KATHMANDU, June 13: The number of mobile users in Nepal has surpassed 17,600,000 in Nepal, according to the latest data of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB). As per the latest data revealed by the NRB, the number of mobile banking users in the country has reached 17,676,259 as of May 14, 2022. The number has increased by 1.66 percent in comparison to the previous year. The number stood at 17,382,448 as of May 14, 2021.

Nabil Bank ties up with Payment Nepal

KATHMANDU, May 11: Nabil Bank has partnered with Payment Nepal (Gateway Payment Service Pvt. Ltd, a Payment System Operator licensed by Nepal Rastra Bank) to offer acceptance of its mobile-based real-time payment system, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), in Nepal.  UPI is an instant real-time payment system developed by National Payments Corporation of India facilitating inter-bank and cross-border transactions. This partnership is expected to enable millions of Nepalese and Indians who travel across the borders every year to make seamless payments related to their health, education and business services using UPI-based mobile applications across shops and merchant stores in both the nations. The partnership agreement was signed by Mr. Anil Keshary Shah, Chief Executive Officer of Nabil Bank and Mr. Rajesh Prasad Manandhar, Chief Executive Officer of Gateway Payment Service.  This partnership empowers Nabil Bank’s mobile banking users to make safe and seamless payments across merchant stores in India. Similarly, merchants associated with Nabil UPI QR can accept payments from Indian tourists using UPI based mobile apps including PhonePay, Google Pay, and Paytm. Nabil Bank Limited is the nation’s first private sector bank, established in 1984 AD. The Bank serves a complete line of commercial banking products through branch banking, treasury, trade, cards, remittance and investment banking.  The Bank operates through a network of 150 branch offices, 187 ATMs, numerous POS terminals, remittance agents spread across the nation and over 170 international correspondent banking relationships.

36.3 million deposit accounts in Nepal, says NRB report

KATHMANDU, Aug 21: A report prepared by the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has unveiled that there were 36.3 million deposit accounts in Nepal. The report added that financial access has expanded to 60.9 percent of Nepalis who have at least one deposit account in the bank. There are altogether 5,978 banks of various classes such as A, B and C as of April this year.  The study conducted on the status of financial access in Nepal showed there were 36.3 million deposit accounts and 1.6 plus loan accounts in Nepal by mid-June 2020. Among the total deposit accounts, 67.7 percent are active while the remaining ones are dormant. Similarly, of active deposit accounts, female’s account accounted for 72.2 per cent.  Similarly, out of total deposit accounts, saving accounts constitute 90.6 per cent. Among the total 753 local levels, 750 local units had commercial banks ensuring people's financial access. Dhading district’s Rubi Valley, Jajarkot’s Junichande and Bajhang’s Saipal have no commercial banks, according to the report.  Among those having access to banking in the country, the number of mobile banking users stands at 32 per cent, the report mentioned.
