Chand elected as RPP Kanchanpur chair

KANCHANPUR, September 13: Gajendra Bahadur Chand has been unanimously elected as the Chairperson of Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Kanchanpur. The district convention of the party held on Sunday in Mahendranagar elected youth leader Chand.  Newly-elected chairperson Chand expressed his commitment to unite and strengthen the party by managing exiting discontents. He urged one and all not to get misconceived that RPP is a party of old generation, adding now it has a clear majority of young leaders in the district.  “RPP would collaborate for development works and also stand against anomalies”, he said, adding, “We would strongly present against the irregularities of local municipalities”.  The convention has elected 29 members in the committee.

NRNA extends assistance to flood survivors

MAHENDRANAGAR, October 26: The Non-Resident Nepali's Association (NRNA) has extended assistance to the 75 flood hit households from Bhimdattanagar Municipality-13 of Kanchanpur district. The assistance was provided on Monday. NRNA Chairperson Bhuwan Pant himself arrived here to distribute the relief amount. "Seventy-five households suffering worst from the disaster were provided the relief materials," said local coordinator of the NRNA, Madhav Prasad Joshi, who is also the former vice chair of Chamber of Commerce Kanchanpur. The relief materials worth Rs 8 million were distributed to the disaster hit families, said relief distribution coordinator of NRNA, Manoj Gorkhali. The households at the riverine area of Bhimdattanagar and Dodhara Chandani are also being distributed the relief amount today. In the first round, 300 poor households suffering the floods and inundation were provided the relief materials like tarpaulin sheet, clothes, and food stuffs.

Tharu community celebrating 'Atwari festival'

DEUKHURI, September 12: The Tharu community is celebrating 'Atwari' festival today. With a majority of the population living in Banke, Bardiya, Kailali, Kanchanpur and Dang districts, the community celebrates it as a big festival after Maghi.  The festival, which has religious and cultural significance, starts today and ends tomorrow. According to Tharu culture expert Ashok Tharu, they eat Dar or various delicacies on the first night of the festival including rice and fish. On the second day, most men and women who wish to do so observe fasting. The festival, which is traditionally celebrated on Sundays or Aitabar in Nepali, is called 'Atwari'. "This is the biggest festival after the Maghi for the Tharus," said Bhuvan Chaudhary, chair of the Tharu Welfare Assembly.  The local levels in the district have announced a public holiday on the occasion of the festival today. Ghorahi, Tulsipur sub-metropolitan municipality, Rapti, Dangisharan and Gadhwa rural municipalities have given public leave today.
