SEPT 8: The company revealed four versions of the new handset at its Cupertino headquarters, with an audience attending in person for the first time since the pandemic.
It also showed off a new extreme sports wearable - the Watch Ultra.
The event focused on next generation iPhone, Watch and AirPod products.
Apple CEO Tim Cook was on stage at the Steve Jobs theatre inside the tech giant's California campus - but the presentation itself was entirely pre-recorded.
Apple Watch Series 8
Apple Watch Series 8 has a number of new features, including car crash detection, temperature sensors for tracking ovulation cycles and a new low-power mode option.
People have been cautious about menstrual trackers since changes were made to abortion legislation in the US and there are concerns that data about periods could be used by law enforcement. Apple says the data on its devices will be encrypted and only accessible via a passcode or biometrics.
"We are taking our commitment to women's health even further," said Jeff Williams, Chief Operating Officer at Apple.
Apple said a new automatic retrospective ovulation notification could help those who are trying to conceive.
If activated, the new watch can monitor body temperate every five seconds overnight, and detect tiny changes which can signal ovulation.
Another new feature is car crash detection. Using sensors, the watch will be able to identify a severe crash and will automatically connect its wearer with emergency services, provide their exact location and notify emergency contacts.
The Series 8 now also features a low power mode, a feature borrowed from the iPhone, that promises up to 36 hours of battery life on a full charge.
The Apple Watch Series 8 is priced from $399 in the US, £419 in the UK.
Apple Watch Ultra
Swim proof, dust proof and crack resistant - Apple has announced its rival to the likes of Garmin, Polar and other rugged watchmakers.
Ultramarathoner Scott Jurek from Born to Run appeared in the presentation for the new watch, which focused on a larger face design for extreme sports use.
All Ultra watches have up to 36 hours battery life on a single charge and an extended battery life of 60 hours, with Apple promising enough power for its customers to complete an ultra-triathlon which includes swimming, cycling and running.
The Apple Watch Ultra is priced from $799 in the US, £849 in the UK
iPhone 14
The company is releasing the iPhone 14 in two sizes, the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 14 Plus.
The new handsets are capable of sending an emergency call for help via satellite. The phone will display the whereabouts of passing satellites overhead and demonstrate how to point the device at them correctly.
It can take from 15 seconds to a few minutes to send a basic message.
"The investment to add satellite capability should not be underestimated," said Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight.
"It will likely have taken Apple years to put all the pieces of the puzzle in place, including a commercial agreement with satellite provider Globalstar, and the creation of the infrastructure needed to pass messages to the emergency services."
Tech analyst Paolo Pescatore said he believed the innovation was good news for consumers "in hard to reach areas".
"It is encouraging to see providers starting to get serious about using satellite - ultimately reliable and robust connectivity is still highly sought after among all users," he said.
iPhone 14 camera
The tech giant announced a new 12-megapixel camera, capable of taking photos of fast-moving subjects, and the company claims a 49% improvement in low-light capturing.
The front camera also included auto-focus for the first time, to help sharpen selfies.
According to Apple, iPhone users took more than three trillion photos in the last 12 months.
The iPhone 14 is priced from $799 (US), £849 (UK).
iPhone 14 Pro
The biggest change in iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max design is the top of the screen which is now a pill shaped cut-out.
A feature called the Dynamic Island has replaced the black notch, which many iPhone users complain about - and it can change shape depending on what notifications there are.
The other big change is that the handset can always remain on.
When the phone is not in use, the screen dims and the refresh rate is lowered.
The handset comes in a deep purple colour alongside black, silver and gold.
The iPhone 14 Pro is priced at $999 (US), £1099 (UK).
AirPods
AirPods Pro are easier to find than their predecessors. Each pair comes with a new system for finding individual lost earphones, which play a chime when dropped outside of the case.
Additionally, the case itself gets its own speaker, which will play a louder sound when prompted by the Find My app.
The new AirPods Pro are priced at $249 (US), £249 (UK).
AUG 4: The drills are due to begin at 12:00 local time (04:00 GMT) and in several areas are due to take place within 12 miles of the island.
Taiwan faced "deliberately heightened military threats", President Tsai said.
Ms Pelosi made a brief but controversial visit to Taiwan, which China regards as a breakaway province.
The drills - China's biggest ever around Taiwan - are Beijing's main response to the visit, although it has also blocked some trade with the island.
The exercises will take place in busy waterways and will include long-range live ammunition shooting, Beijing says.
Taiwan said it scrambled jets to warn off Chinese warplanes on Wednesday.
Its military had also fired flares to drive away unidentified aircraft, probably drones, which were flying over the Kinmen islands, located close to the mainland,
Taiwan's defence ministry also said it had suffered cyber attacks, following similar attacks on other government websites earlier in the week.
Taiwan has asked ships to find alternative routes to avoid the drills and is negotiating with neighbouring Japan and the Philippines to find alternative aviation routes.
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said the military drills were irresponsible and warned they could spiral out of control.
The US hoped Beijing would avoid "escalation that could lead to a mistake or miscalculation" in the air or on the seas, he said in an interview with National Public Radio on Wednesday.
Japan has also expressed concern to China over the areas covered by the military drills, which it says overlaps with its exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
Tokyo expects issues surrounding Taiwan to be "resolved peacefully through dialogue", chief cabinet secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said on Wednesday.
The boundaries of Japan's EEZ have been contentious among its neighbours, and includes some islets also claimed by Beijing.
In response, Chinese government spokeswoman Hua Chunying said the waters in this area had not been delimited and Beijing did not accept the "so-called" Japan EEZ.
These drills are unprecedented
The announcement of six large exclusion zones around the island starting on Thursday, and lasting for four days, is ominous. Beijing did the same thing back in 1996, the last time there was a so called "Taiwan Straits Crisis". But then the exclusion zones were all well outside Taiwan's territorial waters.
This time three of the six zones intrude into Taiwan's 12-mile limit. That is unprecedented. Taiwan's defence ministry has already called the move a breach of UN conventions, and said it amounts to an air and sea blockade against the island.
If China were to move ships or aircraft into those areas, it would amount to an invasion of Taiwan territory. This makes the stakes much higher as Taiwan may feel compelled to defend its own waters.
The US Navy is watching all this very closely, and already has the USS Ronald Reagan carrier battle group sailing nearby in the Philippine Sea.
Mrs Pelosi, the most senior US politician to visit Taiwan in 25 years, made the trip as part of a wider Asian tour.
China had warned her not to travel to the island.
Accusing the US of "violating China's sovereignty under the guise of so-called democracy", Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said: "Those who play with fire will not come to a good end and those who offend China will be punished."
In a statement after the visit, Ms Pelosi said China cannot "prevent world leaders or anyone from travelling to Taiwan to pay respect to its flourishing democracy, to highlight its many successes and to reaffirm our commitment to continued collaboration".
After leaving Taiwan, Ms Pelosi travelled to South Korea, where she is due to meet the speaker of the National Assembly, Kim Jin-pyo.
They are expected to discuss regional security, economic co-operation and climate change.
The US walks a diplomatic tightrope with its Taiwan policy. On the one hand, it abides by the "One China" policy, which recognises only one Chinese government, giving it formal ties with Beijing and not Taiwan.
On the other, it maintains a "robust unofficial" relationship with the island, which includes selling weapons for Taiwan to defend itself.
Aug 3: It accused Ms Pelosi, the most senior US politician in 25 years to visit the island China claims as its own, of "playing with fire".
"Those who play with fire will perish by it," Beijing warned in a statement.
US national security spokesperson John Kirby said there was "no reason for this visit to become a spurring event for a crisis or conflict".
Speaking after Ms Pelosi's arrival, he reiterated to reporters that the trip was consistent with the US's long-standing policy towards China and did not violate the country's sovereignty.
Early on Wednesday, Ms Pelosi made her way to parliament, where she spoke to Taiwan's deputy speaker and then addressed the media.
She said she came "in peace to the region" and that she wanted to increase parliamentary exchanges between Washington and Taipei, and commended Taiwan for being "one of the freest societies in the world". She then headed in to a closed-door session.
She also said that a US bill on computer chips would be a good opportunity to increase cooperation given that Taiwanese chip manufacturer TSMC produces more than half of the world's semiconductors.
Ms Pelosi is expected to meet Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen later on Wednesday, as well as a group of human rights activists.
Her visit comes despite repeated warnings from China, which sees Taiwan as a breakaway province which will one day unite with it. Beijing has not ruled out the possible use of force to achieve this.
Even before Ms Pelosi's visit, tensions between the US and China have been rising for years - with Taiwan being one of the major flash points.
As her plane touched down, Chinese state media reported that its military jets were crossing the Taiwan strait. Taiwan denied those reports at the time, but later said that more than 20 Chinese military planes had entered its air defence zone on Tuesday.
Within an hour of Ms Pelosi's arrival, China announced that the People's Liberation Army will conduct a series of live-fire military drills in the air and at sea around Taiwan later this week - warning ships and aircraft not to enter the affected areas.
This follows days of escalating tensions in which Chinese warplanes had already ventured out as far as the median line, the unofficial divide separating China and Taiwan in the waters between them.
'Not going to be intimidated'
While Ms Pelosi's visit had been the subject of huge international speculation for days, it had been shrouded in secrecy until the last minute.
When she set off on a tour of Asia on Sunday, there was no mention of Taiwan on her official itinerary, which included Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan.
The White House has been open in its opposition to any such trip, and President Joe Biden said the military assessed it as "not a good idea".
But after Ms Pelosi landed, the White House's Mr Kirby told CNN this visit was similar to previous trips by other officials, adding that the "United States is not going to be intimidated by threats".
On Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi released a statement reiterating China's opposition to Ms Pelosi's visit.
Mr Wang called it an "open political provocation", adding that it "seriously violates the one-China principle and harms China's sovereignty".
"The US must stop obstructing China's great reunification. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China".
China exerts international pressure on other nations to accept its "One China" principle - that there is only one Chinese nation, based in Beijing. Only 15 nations in the world have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
The US however, abides by the "One China" policy - which sees it recognising and having formal ties with China rather than Taiwan - but allows it to maintain a "robust unofficial" relationship with the island. That includes selling weapons for Taiwan to defend itself.
For its newest Echo and Echo Dot devices, Amazon has included a new capability. The smart speakers will be able to detect occupancy in a house using ultrasonic and turn on/off linked devices like lights or your Fire TV.
The capability, which was initially revealed in September at Amazon's autumn hardware event, is now available for third-generation Echo and Echo Dot speakers. The Alexa app will allow users to enable or disable this capability. Users may now create occupancy routines that leverage the new capabilities to do activities like turning on lights upon entering a room and shutting them off when the space is empty.
Users may also tell Alexa to play music when motion is detected near an Echo speaker for a certain amount of time, and then turn it off when they leave. For each compatible Echo device, the function will be listed under Motion Detection in the Alexa app settings. This capability appears to be comparable to the motion-sensing feature featured on newer...
