We don’t entrust heritage conservation to contractors: Madhyapur Mayor

Madhyapur Thimi is a culturally rich municipality situated in the centre of the valley districts -- Lalitpur, Kathmandu and Bhaktapur. However, it has often been overlooked and overshadowed by its more popular neighbours. But now, Mayor Madan Sundar Shrestha wants to change that. Aashish Mishra of The Rising Nepal talked to him about his efforts to preserve and promote the heritage of Madhyapur Thimi in Bhaktapur district and develop the municipality as a tourist destination. KMC, DoA at loggerheads over structures at world heritage site

Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is once again at loggerheads with the Department of Archaeology (DoA) and heritage conservation activists. The metropolitan that had initially sought to concretise Rani Pokhari, is apparently concretising Kamal Pokhari, tried to demolish the historic Bag Durbar (its office building) and did little to preserve the centuries-old pond that Chhaya Centre covered and built or oppose the use of cement during the reconstruction of the Swayambhunath Stupa, is now allegedly building unauthorised structures within the Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square Protected Monument Zone.

Federal govt not interested in heritage conservation: Mayor Shakya

KATHMANDU, March 4: Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Bidya Sundar Shakya has complained that the federal government is not interested in the protection and conservation of the historical and archeological heritage of Kathmandu. Mayor Shakya said that although the federal government has the responsibility to protect the heritage, it has not acted accordingly.
