Domestic flight services resume today

KATHMANDU, July 1: Operations of the country's domestic flights, which were put off to stem the outbreak of COVID-19, have resumed after an interval of around two months.  Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), the aviation regulatory body, has developed the flights calendar in a way to operate 64 flights daily for the domestic flight service company.  The government had enforced prohibitory orders on April 29 to contain the coronavirus pandemic. Likewise, domestic flights have been put off since May 3 and international flights since May 6.  Assessing the present pandemic context when the regular flights have been put off at the Tribhuvan International Airport, the calendar is prepared allowing an interval of 10 minutes between flights. In normal times, a domestic flight takes off every two minutes. Also kept into consideration while developing the calendar was to avoid crowds in the airport terminals.  According to TIA’s general manager Pratap Babu Tiwari, Buddha Air has been permitted to operate 31 flights while Yeti Airlines 15, Shree Airlines seven, Saurya Airlines three and three each for the airlines operating flights towards stock.  The Airport will effectively enforce the health safety protocol issued by the Nepal government and airport for safe travel of the air passengers.  The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation had directed the CAAN to operate flights limiting their frequencies to 50 percent of total domestic flights effective from July 1 until another notice.

Nepal calls for ensuring easy access to antio-COVID-19 vaccines

Nepal has noted that the anti-COVID-19 vaccine should not be made a subject of racism and nationalism but an accessible public good which can be easily purchased and used by all. Nepal noted this while taking part in the ongoing 77th session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) underway in Bangkok on the theme of “Building back better from crises through regional cooperation in Asia and the Pacific.” On the occasion, Nepal has stressed on the inevitability of the shared cooperation and understanding among all the nations considering whole world a society in the context when the entire human being is grappling with a crisis. National Planning Commission (NPC) Vice-Chairperson Prof Dr Pushpa Raj Kandel leading a six-member Nepali delegation said that the COVID-1`9 pandemic has adversely impacted the Nepali economy in general while it hardest-hit are trade, tourism and transport sectors, shared the Bangkok-based Nepali Embassy today. He further informed the participants about the measures adopted by Nepal government in preventing the outbreak of the virus. Noting that the multi-faceted impacts of pandemic are likely to dent the country's dream of graduating to the status of developing country from the existing Least Developed Country (LDC), he said Nepal has been working to protect the lives of its citizens, improve the health service system and sustain the economy of the country. The delegation comprises NPC Secretary Kewal Prasad Bhandari, Nepali Ambassador to Thailand and Permanent Nepali Representative for UN ESCAP Ganesh Dhakal and senior officials of Ministry of Foreign Affairs and NPC, the Embassy sources said. ---

Year 2077 was not meaningless-PM Oli

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that the government did not allow 2077 to be a wasteful year by gaining added enthusiasm on development works amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.  In his address to the nation on the first day of the New Year-2078 from the Singhadurbar-based reconstructed Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers today, PM Oli said the long cherished dream of Kathmandu residents has been materialized and new development works have been accomplished.  In his address, the Prime Minster also highlighted the achievements made and challenges surfaced in different sectors in the year 2077 BS.  Also on the occasion, PM Oli made it clear that the government was not in favour of enforcing lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic to the possible extent.  He said that the Nepal government however was very sensitive to protect the lives of the people.
