KATHMANDU, Oct 16: With the Tihar festival on their footsteps, the farmers of Bhaktapur are busy picking the velvet flower that will be largely used during the festival.

KAILALI, Oct 27: Flowers, one of the most essential items for celebrating the Tihar festival, have run out of stock in the district. Though flowers are cultivated commercially, there is a shortage of flowers.
Tihar, the festival of light and flowers, has begun by observing Kaag Tihar on Sunday. As part of Tihar festival, Kaag Tihar is celebrated on the first day of the five-day festival by feeding crows.
KATHMANDU, Oct 20: The government has begun implementing the decision to prohibit selling of plastic flowers and garlands.
With the Tihar festival on our doorsteps, the government has decided to ban producing, selling and storing of plastic flowers and garlands.
As per the notice issued by the Department of Environment, those found selling plastic flowers and garlands will be fined up to Rs 100,000.
The main day of Tihar festival, Bhai Tika, is being celebrated with sisters offering ‘tika’ to their brothers Saturday.
On the day, sisters offer tika and garlands of makhamali and sayapatri flowers to their brothers wishing them happiness, long life and prosperity. They also offer them sweets, species, walnuts and selroti, a special kind of bread cooked in oil.
The auspicious hour for offering and receiving ‘tika’ on the main day of Tihar Festival, Bhai Tika, is 11:02 am. However, it can be held throughout the day, said Chairperson of the Nepal Calendar Determination Committee, Shree Krishna Adhikari.
KATHMANDU: Busy market places in New Road and Ason are crowded with the shoppers buying flowers and garlands for the festival of Tihar.
Flowers and flower garlands hold a huge cultural significance during the Tihar festival. Sisters put flower garlands around their brothers neck. Flowers are also used to decorate houses.

KATHMANDU: Marigold [Sayapatri] flowers have special significance during the festival of Tihar.
Marigold is mainly used for making garlands during the Tihar festival. Sisters put flower garlands around their brothers’ necks during Bhai Tika, the most special day of the five-day festival.
People also decorate their houses with flowers, especially marigolds, during the festival.
Meanwhile, a Marigold garden in Birendranagar of Surkhet is popular these days. Scores of people visit the site not only to buy flowers for the festival but also to take photos and videos.
Managed by Karnali Agromart Private Limited, the garden has at least 1,200 marigold plants.
As it is the festive season, the garden is selling hundreds of kilograms of flowers a day. A kg of flower sells at Rs 400. They also sell a garland at Rs 150.
