KATHMANDU, Feb 21: The main opposition party, CPN-UML has maintained that the party won’t allow the government to ratify the Millennium Corporate Challenge (MCC) until the government addresses the demand of the party. “Until the demands of the party are not fulfilled, the UMl won’t let the government ratify the compact,” said Bishal Bhattari, chief whip of the party. “The party will also not participate in any sort of parliamentary proceedings,” Bhattari added. The party wants the Speaker of the lower house to take action against 14 lawmakers of the party who were expelled by the party. The expelled lawmakers including Madhav Kumar Nepal later formed the CPN (Unified Socialist). “Once the demands are addressed, the party will make its position on the MCC agreement,” Bhattari said.  The main opposition party has so far not made its position clear about the MCC. The government on Sunday tabled the MCC in parliament amid UML’s obstruction.

UML accepts MCC-Nepal compact through its political report

KATHMANDU, March 23: The main opposition party, CPN-UML, has accepted the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC)-Nepal Compact. Earlier, while the ruling alliance ratified the MCC compact, the party had not stated its position. However, the political report of the party presented in the party's central committee meeting by Chairman KP Sharma Oli reads that the MCC compact has been ratified and it should now be implemented for the welfare of the nation. The report has also stressed a high flow of Foreign Direct Investments in the country for a prosperous development. KP Sharma Oli also maintained that the interpretive declaration issued by the government while ratifying the compact is meaningless.

UML yet to make its position on MCC agreement

KATHMANDU, Feb 21: The main opposition party, CPN-UML, is yet to make its decision regarding the Millennium Corporate Challenge (MCC). The government on Sunday tabled the MCC agreement in parliament despite huge public outcry and protests. The party has been maintaining to announce its position regarding the $500 million American grant only after the government’s decision, but the party has not made any decisions so far. At the time when the ruling alliance shares different positions regarding the MCC, the move of the main opposition party is considered crucial for passing or scrapping the MCC agreement. Subash Nembang, a key leader of UML, maintained that the party is confused about the government’s move to table the MCC. “While the government was tabling the MCC, lawmakers of the ruling alliance themselves were opposing it. The sister organizations of coalition members are staging protests against it. So, we are confused,” Nembang said. Similarly, Bishal Bhattari, the chief whip of UML, said that UML won’t make its position regarding the MCC until it is put up for voting. “UML won’t participate in any sort of parliamentary proceedings until our demands against Speaker Sapkota is addressed,” he further added.

The main opposition party, UML, has been obstructing the House proceedings accusing Speaker Sapkota of not taking action against the 14 lawmakers including Madhav Kumar Nepal who later formed the CPN (Unified Socialist). Our demands have not been addressed yet, so the party will continue the obstruction, said Sher Bahadur Tamang, lawmaker of the UML. A parliamentary party meeting of the ruling Nepali Congress held on Tuesday took a decision to table the MCC in the next House session.
