Tihar celebrations gain pace with Laxmi Puja today

The first day of Yamapanchak, is observed as Kaag Tihar (Crow Festival) and the crow is worshipped and given food. On the first day of Tihar crow is worshipped as the messenger of Yama Raj (the god of Death). This year, Kaag Tihar is observed on November 11. Kukur Tihar, the festival dedicated to worshipping dogs, is being celebrated on November 12, Sunday. People worship dogs by feeding them, putting red vermillion powder and garlanding them. Dog is worshipped as an envoy of Yama Raj the god of death. Dogs since time immemorable have been the most faithful companions of humans, and on Kukur Tihar dogs are revered as the symbol of loyalty. Laxmi Puja generally falls on the third day of Tihar but this year Laxmi Puja and Kukur Tihar will be observed on the same day, November 13. Laxmi Puja holds a special significance for Hindus, People decorate their houses with flowers, lights, and oil lamps and worship goddess Laxmi with the belief that Goddess Laxmi will bless us with prosperity.

Yamapanchak began this year on Saturday with Dhanteras. As the ‘Panchak’ in its name suggests, the festival, better known as Tihar, is generally celebrated for five days from the 13th day of the dark fortnight of the Nepali month of Kartik to the second day of the bright fortnight. However, this Bikram year of 2079 has given Nepalis a confusing six-day Deepawali, one where Kukur Tihar and Laxmi Puja have fallen on the same day but Laxmi Puja and Gai Puja have uncharacteristically not.

KATHMANDU: Laxmi Puja, the third day of Tihar festival, is being observed across the country on Thursday.  On this day, people clean their houses and surroundings, illuminate their houses with lamps to 'welcome' the Laxmi, goddess of wealth.  Also known as Yam Panchak, the festival is observed for five days. The first day of Yam Panchak is observed as Kaag Tihar by feeding crows, regarded as messengers in Nepali society. The second day is Kukur Tihar- the day is observed worshipping dogs. The third day is Gai Tihar and Laxmi Puja worshipping cows and Laxmi, the goddess of wealth. The fourth day of Tihar is known as Goru Puja - worship of oxen, while the fifth and final day is Bhai Tika - the day when brothers receive Tika from their sisters.  However, both Kaag Tihar and Kukur Tihar fell on the same day Wednesday), according to Calendar Determination Committee Chair, Prof Shree Krishna Adhikari.  People from the Newari community celebrate the fourth day of Yam Panchak as Mha Puja - worship of one's own soul.  The auspicious hour for Bhai Tika this year is 11:02 am Saturday (November 6), he added.

KATHMANDU, Nov 14: Kukur Tihar, the festival of dogs, is being celebrated at every household today. Kukur Tihar is often observed on the second day of Yamapanchak of the Tihar festival. However, this year Laxmi Puja and Kukur Tihar have fallen on the same day, according to Nepal Calendar Determination Committee.

11:55 am as auspicious time for Bhai Tika

The festival begins with Kaag Tihar on November 5, Kukur Tihar on November 6, Laxmi Puja on November 7, Govardhan Puja, Gai Puja and Mha Puja on November 8 and Bhai Tika on November 9.
