Newly elected deputy speaker of HoR sworn in

KATHMANDU, July 17: Newly elected deputy speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR), Pushpa Bhusal took an oath of office and secrecy on Friday. Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota administered the oath to Bhusal in presence of President Bidya Devi Bhandari amid an event held at the President's Office. Bhusal, Nepali Congress’s leader, was elected to the post of deputy speaker on Friday.

KATHMANDU, July 15: Voting for the election of the deputy speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) is scheduled for 3 PM on Friday. Pushpa Bushla, leader of Nepali Congress, backed by the ruling alliance and Bidya Bhattarai of CPN-UML, the main opposition party, are contesting for the post. As the ruling alliance of Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Center), CPN (Unified Socialist), Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) and Rastriya Janamorcha Party have majority in parliament, election of Bhusal as new deputy speaker of the lower house is very much likely. There are currently 275 lawmakers in the lower house. Of them, 98 represents the CPN-UML. Nepali Congress has 63 lawmakers, CPN (MC) has 49, CPN (US) has 23, JSP has 19 and Rastriya Janamorch Party has one making a total of 155 for the ruling alliance. Likewise, Loktantrik Samajwadi Party, which has already announced its support for the ruling alliance, has 13 lawmakers. With this, Bhusal seems to have the support of as many as 137 lawmakers. For Bhattarai, the number stands at 101 including support from Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Nepal Workers' and Peasants' Party and independent lawmakers.

CPN-UML directs its lawmakers to attend Friday’s HoR meeting mandatorily

KATHMANDU, July 14: CPN-UML, the main opposition party, has directed all its lawmakers to attend the House of Representatives (HoR) meeting scheduled for Friday. The party leaders are currently busy holding discussions to finalize the party's candidate for the post of deputy speaker of the lower house. The poll body has asked the parties willing to contest for the post to register names of their candidates on Thursday. An election of the deputy speaker of the HoR is scheduled for Friday and the UML has directed all its lawmakers not to miss the meeting. The UML will soon announce the name of its candidate once the ruling alliance finalizes its candidate for the post, according to UML leader Subhash Nembang. “The party will not contest in the election if the ruling alliance does not file their candidacy for the post,” a UML leader told Ratopati. However, the ruling alliance has already decided to file a candidacy of Pushpa Bushla for the post.
