IMEI of mobile sets purchased in Nepal need not be registered: NTA

KATHMANDU, July 8: Nepal Telecom Authority (NTA) has said that International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) should not be registered in mobile phones purchased in Nepal. Issuing a notice on Wednesday, the Authority shared that it was not necessary to re-register the IMEI number of the mobile set imported and purchased in Nepal as per the rules in terms of business.  NTA is implementing a mobile device management system (MDMS) from July 16 in order to make it systematic by discouraging illegal import, sale, distribution and use of mobile sets.  “Many mobile users have been visiting the Authority due to confusion whether they have to register IMEI of their set they have been using. Technical problems have surfaced in the system due to excessive flow of people registering IMEI of their mobile sets in the website available in Authority’s website and it will take some time for resumption of the website” reads the notice.

NTA fixes MDMS to prevent use of illegal mobile phone sets

KATHMANDU, July 16: The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has fixed a technology to prevent the operation of services from the illegal mobile phone sets.  During the announcement of the budget for the current fiscal year, the then Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Poudel said the provision would come into effect from the very first day of the current fiscal year.  As per the announcement, the NTA today installed the 'Mobile Device Management System (MDMS)' to act against the illegal phone calls. The system was in place after long preparations, it is said. The system requires the provision of acquiring type approval and the registration of the IMEI number from the NTA before importing the mobile phone sets.  Issuing a public notice today, the NTA said the implementation of MDMS would make no difference for the operation of the currently active mobile phones. For the time being, the registration of mobile phone sets purchased from the individual level can be registered through the NTA's website https://eir.nta.gov.np/individual/register. The system bars the use of telecommunications service from those mobile phone sets imported evading tax, manufactured through duplication and the stolen sets.  A separate building has been built at Chabahil for the operation of software and hardware of the MDMS.

Your phone’s IMEI number is more important in Nepal now. What’s it anyway?

Nepal Telecommunications Authority, the country's telecommunications regulator, has recently released a notice stating that all the mobile phone sets that have not been registered so far or brought illegally will be unusable from July 16. Although the registration process has now been halted due to excessive traffic on the system, it is expected to resume as soon as possible and the rule will come into effect later this week.
