Voters’ Expectations

Though the counting of votes of the elections to the federal and provincial elections is still underway, the results which were made public as of this writing have challenged predictions made by political leaders and pundits. Prior to the polls, the political parties were divided into two fractions and played tactics of various types against each other. They formed alliances to woo the voters, ignoring their own ideological integrity. They tried their best to prove that they are right and the other group is wrong. But their message hardly impacted voters. Both groups’ various tricks show that they are strong, but the voters proved that their tie-ins were apparently cosmetic, impractical and mere opportunistic. Nepali voters are not meek and simple as some top leaders think. They are rather calculative, clever and progressive.

Keep Electoral Promises

The House of Representatives and Provincial Assembly elections are fast approaching in the country now. The elections will take place soon after the two greatest festivals of most Nepalis, Dashain and Tihar, are over. How political leaders canvass during this festive occasion is also being observed with keen interest by the general public. In spite of the criticism of the political leaders who, the people feel are not doing their best for the general public, they still are very interested in casting their votes. If one is to go by the results of the local level elections some months ago, it can be assumed that more fresh faces will be seen after the upcoming elections for members in the parliament. This will mean that independent and young candidates will also have to be included in the government after the polls at the central level and the provinces as well. This will be a jolt for the traditional parties, but choosing the right candidates will go a long way in steering the natio

Prioritise Disaster Management

Though Nepal has been grappling with multiple difficulties such as the price hike of essential commodities and petroleum products, political leaders and cadres seem to be busy celebrating their victory in the local elections. They are found putting on vermilion on their foreheads as a sign of winning and taking out rallies to spread the message they have won the polls. On the other side, the Nepali people, after casting their votes to the candidates of their choice, have pinned high hopes on their newly-elected representatives that they would dedicate themselves to resolve the problems facing the locals. They can be agents of change as they exercise many exclusive powers.

Ukraine is being led by an artist, so don’t underestimate us: KC

KATHMANDU, April 11: Unnat Loktantrik has given an opportunity to an artist to file a nomination for the post of mayor of Kathmandu Metropolis in the upcoming local polls. I am grateful to the party for believing in me.  My decision to contest for the post of Kathmandu’s Mayor in the upcoming polls have aroused many positive and negative comments, questions and doubts among the general public. I am also grateful for those negative comments which have helped me learn lessons that will shape my upcoming journeys.  My decision to contest in the local elections has brought an excitement among the film fraternity and movie lovers. Many believe that artists and actors are not capable in politics. However, I believe that actors and artists are well informed and responsible. They atleast have knowledge of their working field and it is way better than those who only know how to deliver a speech. I was born and raised in Kathmandu, so I am well aware about the problems and situation of Kathmandu. I don’t know how to lie to the general public and ask for votes.  Our country is deteriorating day by day and we must serve our people and nation from the heart. Our youths are victims of brain drain and are compelled to leave the country and I am well aware about it. Besides, my films also reflect on the situation of the country, youths and various problems that we are facing as Kathmanduites. Can an artist/actor govern the country? I have heard people saying that artists or actors are not capable in political sectors. But, I don’t agree. What I believe is that artists or actors do not know how to do dirty politics. No one should underestimate actors and artists. We all know the President of Ukraine. He was a comedian before being elected as the country’s president. He is currently fighting with his life to save the country. It is a good example that shows how capable artists and actors can be. Development plans and policies of our political leaders are just paper oriented and limited in their speeches. If they were capable and if they had done their duty, why would some artists or doctors or any people who are not politicians, have to contest in the election? So far, I have not joined any party. In the local election of 2074 BS, I supported the CPN-UML. After that, I have not joined any political party. So far I am independent. (Based on conversation with actor Bhuwan KC)

Israel’s Democracy Fatigue

JERUSALEM – If any Western country is suffering from democratic dysfunction, it is Israel. With the country’s political leaders having again failed to form a government following the most recent parliamentary election in September, voters will head back to the polls in March 2020 for the third time in less than a year. Yet, given Israel’s inflamed, polarized politics and its highly proportional electoral system, what else can one expect from this next national vote except more deadlock?
