268 health workers contracted COVID-19 in Gandaki Province in three weeks

KATHMANDU, Jan 22: At least 268 health workers and doctors have been infected with COVID-19 in Gandaki Province in a period of three weeks, according to the Provincial Health Directorate.  Pokhara, the provincial capital, has most of the infection cases, said Nawaraj Sharma, coordinator of the provincial health emergency work operations centre under the Directorate.  “The number of health workers on the frontline against the infection contracting the virus has been increasing. Most of the infected are from Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences, infectious and communicable disease hospital and Beni Hospital,” he said.  The infected health workers include 138 (Kaski), 42 (Tanahun), 20 (Lamjung), 17 (Nawalparasi), 12 (Syangja), 11 (Baglung), 10 (Parbat), nine (Myagdi), six (Gorkha) and three (Mustang).  All the infected have been in home isolation and their health is normal, said the Directorate.

Should Nepal be bracing for fourth wave of COVID-19?

KATHMANDU, July 20: After more than four months, Nepal is once again witnessing the rise of new novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Nepal on Tuesday recorded 357 new cases of COVID-19, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP). The number was 457 on Monday. Even if the COVID-19 test positivity is going up daily, the ministry has so far not declared the situation as the fourth wave of the disease. However, the public health experts maintain that the fourth wave of COVID-19 has already begun in Nepal. Director at the Epidemiology & Disease Control Division (EDCD), Dr Chuman Lal Das said that the fourth wave of COVID-19 has already begun showing indications in the country. Dr Das also maintained that the BA.5 sub-variant of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 could be causing a surge in new cases recently. According to Dr Babu Ram Marasaini, former director of EDCD, continuous surge in daily new cases of COVID-19 which was down to seven or eight cases a few weeks ago shows that the country has already been hit by the fourth wave of COVID-19. Nepal has recorded 2,026 new cases of COVID-19 in the past eight days. With the rise in the number of COVID-19 patients in hospitals, medics and health workers are also testing positive for the virus.  According to Dr Prawajol Shrestha at Bir Hospital, three doctors, three sanitation workers and two nurses have tested positive for the disease. Likewise, the disease has been diagnosed in seven health workers in Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), according to Dr Niraj Bam.

Teku Hospital to resume COVID-19 vaccination drive from today

KATHMANDU, Jan 25: The Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Disease Hospital at Teku, Kathmandu is resuming the vaccination campaign from today.  Earlier, on Sunday, the hospital had postponed the vaccination against COVID-19 for a week after more than 50 health workers were infected with the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The Director of the Hospital, Dr. Manisha Rawal informed that the vaccination drive is all set to resume at the hospital after the Health Section of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) and the Nepal Red Cross Society agreed to provide human resources for it. The vaccination drive will begin at 10:00 AM today.  The hospital has been providing first, second and booster doses of COVID-19 vaccines.

Actions demanded for misbehaving with health workers

KAVRE, October 1: The Bhumlu Rural Municipality in Kavre district has asked the Kavre District Administration Office to book those involved in misbehaving with its health workers. Health workers from the rural municipality were misbehaved and thrashed from local Anil Pote while giving the second dose of COVID-19 vaccine to the people in Dolalghat. In a complaint filed at the administration office, the rural municipality stated that Assistant Health Worker Hitesh Kumar Mandal was beaten up while vaccinating people at Dulaleshwor Secondary School on Wednesday. Other health workers were also abused. Likewise, Mandal has also lodged an application at the office of the rural municipality seeking action against Mandal for repeatedly threatening him. Chief Administrative Officer of rural municipality Dhakaram Aryal said that action has also been demanded against ward member Manoj Shrestha for tearing up the vaccine's record file. It is said that Shrestha misbehaves with the health workers by piling pressure on them to inoculate the non-prioritised group.

Temporary COVID-19 hospital at Sunwal providing quality service

PARASI, May 23 : Sunwal Municipality of Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta West) has brought into operation a temporary COVID-19 hospital along with high dependency unit (HDU) in the wake of increasing number of COVID-19 patients.  There are 19 beds with oxygen and the HDU along with specialist doctors in the hospital. Now, the COVID-19 patients except those needing ventilators, would be treated with every facility, said Municipality Mayor Bhim Bahadur Thapa. The hospital is run at two-storey building of Child Learning Centre at Somnath of Sunwal-1. The first storey has isolation wards with oxygen and the second the HDU.  There are doctors and health workers available round the clock. Currently, 14 COVID-19 patients are receiving treatment at the hospital.  The Sarbottam Cement Industry provided the medical equipment worth some Rs 7 million for the operation of HDU at the hospital.  Dr Chandra Shekhar Yadav informed that there are two doctors and 12 health workers in the hospital. Three additional doctors are being managed for HDU service, added Mayor Thapa. Chief of District Coordination Committee, Shiva Shankar Raya, claimed that the hospital was exemplary in the district on COVID-19 crisis management. "The hospital has been providing quality service. It is a great aid to control coronavirus. The management here is also effective. The assistance from all sides made it possible," he stressed. As many as 435 people were infected with coronavirus at Sunwal. Among them, 33 succumbed to COVID-19. The municipality is reaching every COVID-19 patient staying at home isolation and providing necessary treatment and counseling. Those in need of oxygen are supplied it immediately by the municipality. Similarly, health workers are mobilized from all 13 health facilities. The municipality has also managed transportation facility for those willing to do PCR test, reaching Butwal, every day.

Australia to assist Nepal in responding to COVID-19

KATHMANDU, May 21: Australia will provide an additional AUD $7 million (NPR 635 million) in funding to Nepal to support the response to COVID-19. The Australian Embassy in Kathmandu stated that this funding is part of a AUD $17.5 million package to support Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, to strengthen the resilience of the South Asian region. Australia’s contribution will boost Nepal’s ability to address COVID-19, including through the procurement of essential equipment and health supplies, such as oxygen for provincial hospitals and personal protective equipment for health workers.  This funding will be delivered to our trusted and established partners working on-the-ground across Nepal, in coordination with the work being undertaken by other donors including the US, UK, Japan and UN agencies.
