Switzerland supports Nepal with essential medical supplies worth USD 8 million to combat COVID-19 crisis

KATHMANDU, May 22: Responding to a request from the Government of Nepal for essential medical supplies to combat the ravaging COVID-19 crisis, Switzerland on Saturday provided medical assistance worth $ 8 million.  A special cargo flight carrying the medical supplies landed at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu earlier on Saturday, where Swiss Ambassador Elisabeth von Capeller handed them directly over to Nepal’s Health and Population Minister, Hridayesh Tripathi.  The 30-tonnes shipment contains 40 ventilators, oxygen concentrators, 1.1 million rapid antigen tests and protective equipment (110’000 KN95 masks, 50’000 gloves and 15’000 suits). “Switzerland stands in solidarity with Nepal and the Nepali people in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. These essential medical supplies will save lives and provide further support to the Government of Nepal to control and contain the pandemic”, said Elisabeth von Capeller, Swiss Ambassador to Nepal. The current shipment of essential medical supplies is part of Switzerland’s comprehensive response to COVID-19 in Nepal, began in April 2020. So far, this has included the procurement of 70,000 Roche PCR test kits and two PCR instruments, and the instalment of safe healthcare waste management and clean drinking water systems in two hospitals in Province 1. Switzerland has also established a scheme engaging local vendors to support farming households to access critical agricultural inputs, such as seeds. It has adapted its existing projects to ensure continuation of services during the COVID-19 pandemic and supported stranded migrants who lost their jobs in the destination countries with shelter, food, medical assistance, legal counselling and assistance for return. Till date, Switzerland has allocated a total of USD 20 million to the COVID-19 response in Nepal.

Aircraft carrying COVID-19 vaccines from China fails to land at TIA

KATHMANDU: An aircraft of the Sichuan Airways arriving from China carrying a shipment of Vero Cell vaccines failed to land at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) Monday morning due to adverse weather conditions.  The airplane returned to China with the medical supplies given to Nepal under the COVAX facility. The supplies incorporating 121,887 doses of vaccines are assisted by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).  Similarly, 1,870,500 doses of vaccines will be arriving from India on Monday itself. So far Nepal has imported 35,466,980 doses of COVID-19 vaccines and 21,654,109 vaccines have been administered.

Israel provides medical supplies to Nepal

KATHMANDU, July 8: Nepal has received medical aid from Israel to support the ongoing fight against COVID-19.  A special flight of Nepal Airlines brought from Israel a consignment of medical support on Thursday. The consignment consists of medical equipment and supplies including ventilators, oxygen concentrators, masks, PPEs and coverall, provided by the government and people of Israel as well as the Nepali community living in Israel  According to the Ministry of Foregin Affairs (MoFA), the Embassy of Nepal in Tel Aviv coordinated for mobilization of the support. The consignment was received by the representative of the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu. Hanan Goder, Ambassador of Israel to Nepal and Harishchandra Ghimire, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, were also present on the occasion.

Italy provides health supplies to Nepal

KATHMANDU, June 25: Health supplies essential for the treatment and control of COVID-19 provided by Italy to Nepal arrived at Tribhuvan International Airport this morning. The medical assistance includes 20 ventilators, 6,000 isolation gowns and 10,000 protective medical supplies. The medical goods were given to Nepal by Italy through the European Union's Civil Protection Mechanism. EU Ambassador to Nepal Nona Deprez handed over the assistance to Dr Roshan Pokharel, Chief Expert at the Ministry of Health and Population today itself . On the occasion, she said that the Union and its member countries were assisting Nepal to cope with the current COVID-19 crisis, adding that the assistance would help in the treatment and prevention of the pandemic and in the strengthening of Nepal's public health sector. On behalf of the Ministry, Dr Pokharel thanked Italy for extending helping hands to Nepal during these hard times.  He vowed for right use and utilization of the assistance materials. As he said, the materials will be distributed to all provinces. Prior to this, Nepal had received this kind of assistance from  EU members Spain, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Malta, Denmark and Ireland, it is said.

NRN South Korea donates medical supplies to Nepal

SEOUL, June 6: The essential medical supplies procured from the monetary assistance of the Non-Resident Nepalis in South Korea for COVID-19 response efforts have been handed over to Nepal. The medical goods worth around 5 million Korean Won (equivalent to around Rs 5.2 million) consist of 100,000 set of surgical masks, 300 PPE sets, 240 bottles of sanitizers, 500 oximeters and various medicines, according to Non-Resident Nepali Association Korea’s general-secretary Bimal Subedi.  The medical supplies were brought to Nepal on June 4 in the Korean Air’s flight along with 112 stranded Nepalis. The Korean Air had ferried those healthcare appliances for free of cost in coordination with the Nepali Embassy in Seoul, South Korea and KME Travels, shared Subedi. From the donated amount, the NRN-South Korea had also purchased 17 sets of oxygen concentrators which were procured from China, according to Subedi.  The Nepali Embassy in Seoul, issuing a press statement, has extended gratitude towards the Nepalis in South Korea for their solidarity in Nepal’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

US to provide vaccines to Nepal

KATHMANDU, June 5: The United States of America is to provide COVID-19 vaccines to Nepal.  Issuing a statement on Friday, joint spokesperson at the Ministry of Health and Population Dr Samir Kumar Adhikari said that the US government has decided to support Nepal with COVID-19 vaccines. The type and number of vaccines are however not decided.  "The announcement to provide COVID-19 vaccines to Nepal is appreciated. We extend heartfelt gratitude for this announcement. Nepal and the Nepali people look forward to similar support and cooperation in the future," reads the statement. Prior to this, the US government had provided medical supplies to help Nepal prevent and control COVID-19.

UK provides 260 ventilators and other medical supplies to Nepal

LONDON, May 28: The Government of the United Kingdom has provided medical supplies to Nepal for the prevention, control and treatment of COVID-19, the Embassy of Nepal in London said. The health supplies provided from the UK government to Nepal include face shields and 260 ventilators along with the equipment needed for ventilator. The health supplies have been sent to Nepal in a plane on Thursday afternoon from London. Likewise, 10 oxygen concentrators have also been sent in the same flight managed by the Non-Resident Nepalis Association, UK, and Embassy of Nepal, London. It is said the Embassy of Nepal in London is making its efforts to receive medical supplies and vaccines from the UK government after Ambassador of Nepal to the UK Lok Darshan Regmi’s meetings with Secretary of State for Defence and Secretary of State for Foreign to immediately receive vaccines and other bilateral assistance for fight against COVID-19.  Ambassador Regmi said that the results of the meetings, interactions and coordination with different sides will appear soon.

UK Ambassador to Nepal handovers medical supplies

KATHMANDU, May 28: The Ambassador of the UK to Nepal, Nicola Pollitt, handed over the health materials to Minister for Health and Population Hridayesh Tripathi at a brief ceremony held at the Tribhuvan International Airport this morning. In order to support Nepal in its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of the United Kingdom provided medical supplies to Nepal. A charter flight carrying the medical consignment arrived in Kathmandu this morning, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Speaking on the occasion, Minister Tripathi expressed gratitude to the British Government for extending helping hands when Nepal is facing a huge challenge in saving people’s lives from the resurgent second wave of the pandemic.  “This assistance from the UK is in keeping with long history of the close and friendly relationship between Nepal and the UK including at the people’s level,” he stated.  Likewise, Ambassador Pollitt assured the Minister of continued British cooperation to Nepal. The medical items provided by the UK include 260 units of ventilators, assorted consumables to last around four weeks, and 19,200 eye protectors. The same charter flight also carried oxygen concentrators donated by NepalMedUK, a charity organization based in the UK.

Nepal receives medical supplies from China to fight COVID-19

KATHMANDU, May 21: The Government of the People’s Republic of China, the Provincial Governments as well as other organizations in China have provided various life-saving medical equipment and supplies to help Nepal fight against Coronavirus, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. Issuing a press statement on Thursday, the Ministry said that China provided 3,500 oxygen cylinders and 10 ventilators as a part of grant assistance adding that 2,000 oxygen cylinders and 10 ventilators have already been airlifted in Kathmandu. The rest of the oxygen cylinders are being delivered at Rasuwagadhi border port shortly, it is said.   Similarly, another consignment of 40 portable ventilators, 20 automated analyzers, 10 DR machines, 20 portable ultrasound, and 30 anesthesia machines worth 5 million RMB is being handed over to the Nepali side at Tatopani border port by next week. The Red Cross Society of China is providing Nepal Red Cross Society 90 oxygen concentrators, 2000 coverall and 700,000 surgical masks, which are being handed over today. Several private organizations in China have also provided medical equipment such as oxygen concentrators, oxygen regulators and valves, oxygen cylinders to Nepal, read the press statement issued by the Ministry. Meanwhile, the Government of the People’s Republic of China has announced additional grant assistance of 5 million RMB under which items such as 650 oxygen concentrators, 20,000 oxygen nasal cannulas and 20,000 oxygen face masks will be provided to Nepal by next month, according to the Ministry. Besides, the Government of the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) of China has handed over the first batch of 150 liquid oxygen cylinders to the Consulate General of Nepal in Lhasa on Thursday. The donated Liquid Oxygen is equivalent to 30,000 liters of liquid oxygen. The liquid oxygen cylinders are expected to arrive in Tatopani border port on Saturday.  Meanwhile, the TAR Government of China has announced to provide additional medical equipment and materials that include 200 ICU beds, 5 ventilators, 10 oxygen concentrators, 800 oxygen gas cylinders with oxygen and 15,000 antigen kits.
