Seventh Gorkha earthquake memorial day being observed today

KATHMANDU, April 25: The seventh memorial day of the Gorkha earthquake is being observed across the country with various programmes. On 25 April, 2015, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit the country with its epicenter in Gorkha's Barpak. The disaster killed approximately 9,000 people and injured over 22,000 others. It damaged over 800,000 private houses and 1500 cultural heritages. Districts including Gorkha, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kavrepalanchok, Sindhupalchok, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Nuwakot, Dhading, Rasuwa, Makawanpur, Sindhuli and Okhaldhunga—were affected the most by the quake. Observation of the quake memorial day aims to make people aware about earthquake safety, it has been said.

Sindhupalchowk reports two aftershocks of Gorkha quake

Two aftershocks of the Gorkha earthquake were recorded in Sindhupalchowk today. The first quake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale was felt at 1:46 pm followed by the next of the same scale at 1.56 pm. National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre’s senior seismologist Lok Bijay Adhikari confirmed the occurrences of two aftershocks of 2015 Gorkha earthquake with the epicenter at Pangphung of the district this afternoon. Earlier on Sunday, Gorkha reported the aftershock of 4.3 Richter scale.

Holiday announced in commemoration of Gorkha quake

GORKHA, April 25: The Barpak Suliot rural municipality in Gorkha has announced a public holiday in the locality today in commemoration of those killed by the Gorkha earthquake. The quake had hit the country on April 25, 2015 with its epicenter of Barpak, killing around 9,000 people.   Today marks the sixth memorial day of Gorkha quake.  Rural municipality chair Bishnu Prasad Bhatta stressed the need for staying alert and prepared for potential disasters in the future.  A total of 72 people of Barpak had lost lives in the disaster.
