Rains bring respite to drought-hit Terai

The districts of the Terai region have been receiving rains since Sunday, and the people have felt a sigh of relief from a prolonged drought. According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), the country is currently experiencing moderate to heavy rainfall due to the influence of a low-pressure system near Bihar, India, and the monsoon trough lying north of its usual position, closer to Nepal.

Terai facing drought situation in mid-monsoon

At a time when the monsoon season has reached its halfway point, nearly all the Terai districts, except for Morang, are facing a situation of an extreme drought thanks to the below average rainfall. In two months from June 1 to August 1, Nepal received 665.7 mm rainfall, which is 45.2 per cent of the monsoon’s overall precipitation. Last year, Nepal received 1472 mm rainfall from June 1 to September 30. However, in the past two months, the country received only 85.1 per cent of rainfall of the corresponding period last year.
