Call for finding long-term solution to Kathmandu Valley’s landless squatters problem

KATHMANDU, Aug 10: Maiya Ale has been residing on the Bagmati River banks with her children for the past 36 years. She is a landless squatter. After the death of her spouse of paralysis 11 years ago, the responsibility of raising and educating their children fell on her shoulders. She has been supporting her family as a street vendor in the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC). But the KMC’s action against street vendors in the form of chasing them away and snatching their goods and stall equipment has taken its toll on them.

Land Commission directs not to demolish buildings in Bagmati corridor

KATHMANDU, Dec 2: The Land Commission has directed the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) not to relocate the landless squatters living in Bagmati corridor. The KMC had begun taking action demolishing houses and buildings at Thapathali, Bagmati corridor – built encroaching the Bagmati River. Soon after the government’s move, the landless squatters took to the street and obstructed the KMC’s action. As many as 18 Metropolitan Police personnel were injured in the clash between landless squatters and the government.

Soon after the government’s move, the landless squatters took to the street and obstructed the KMC’s action. As many as 18 Metropolitan Police personnel were injured in the clash between landless squatters and the government. The people living in the area staged a protest on Tuesday morning as well.
