SC orders to summon HoR meeting on July 18

KATHMANDU, July 12: The Supreme Court (SC) issued a mandamus to summon a fresh session of the reinstated House of Representatives (HoR) for 5 PM on July 18.  A five-member constitutional bench presided by Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana, passed the order to call the House meeting, on Monday.  The House was dissolved by President Bidya Devi Bhandari on May 22 at the recommendation of the Council of Ministers.  Through its landmark verdict on Monday, the apex court issued the mandamus in the name of the Office of President to appoint Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba as the prime minister as per Article 76 (5) in two days.

SC orders govt not to implement Citizenship Ordinance

KATHMANDU, June 10: The Supreme Court (SC)on Thursday issued an interim order in the name of the government not to implement the Citizenship Ordinance-2021.  Hearing on the writ petitions registered at the apex court against the Ordinance, which was issued by President Bidya Devi Bhandari at the recommendation of the Council of Ministers, a Constitutional Bench headed by Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana said that implementation of ordinance can not be judicially justified.  The Bench comprises Justices Dipak Kumar Karki, Mira Khadka, Hari Krishna Karki and Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada besides Rana.  After President Bhandari issued the Ordinance on Citizenship on May 23, a day after she dissolved the lower House of parliament, a total of six writ petitions were registered at the Supreme Court (SC)  claiming that the ordinance does not go in line with the spirit of the Constitution of Nepal.
