Cruise ship with 800 Covid cases docks in Sydney

NOV 12: The Majestic Princess cruise ship arrived at Circular Quay, having sailed from New Zealand. About 4,600 passengers and crew were aboard the ship when it docked - meaning around one in five had Covid. The outbreak is reminiscent of the Ruby Princess cruise ship Covid outbreak of early 2020, where at least 900 people tested positive and 28 died. Marguerite Fitzgerald, the president of cruise operator Carnival Australia, said a large number of cases started to be detected about halfway through the 12-day voyage. All cases were either asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic, she said. Staff would be assisting all guests who have tested positive "with accessing private transport and accommodation to complete their isolation period", she said. The ship will soon depart for Melbourne. Asked about comparisons between the Majestic Princess and the Ruby Princess - which also belongs to the same operator - Ms Fitzgerald said: "Since then, we as a community have learnt a lot, a lot more about Covid." The outbreak comes as Covid cases rise across Australia. In New South Wales, 19,800 new cases were detected in the seven days to Friday.

North Korea: More than a million Covid cases feared

MAY 16: More than a million people have now been sickened by what Pyongyang is calling a "fever", state media said. Some 50 people have died, but it's unclear how many of those suspected cases tested positive for Covid. North Korea has only limited testing capacity, so few cases are confirmed. North Koreans are likely to be especially vulnerable to the virus due to lack of vaccinations and a poor healthcare system. A nationwide lockdown is in place in the reclusive country. State media said Mr Kim led an emergency politburo meeting at the weekend where he accused officials of bungling the distribution of the national medicine reserves. He ordered that the "powerful forces" of the army's medical corps step in to "immediately stabilise the supply of medicines in Pyongyang City". The country announced its first confirmed Covid cases last week - although experts believe the virus has likely been circulating for some time. Mr Kim has imposed "maximum emergency" virus controls, including lockdowns and gathering restrictions in workplaces. The international community offered to supply North Korea with millions of AstraZeneca and Chinese-made jabs last year, but Pyongyang claimed it had controlled Covid by sealing its borders early in January 2020. North Korea shares land borders with South Korea and China, which have both battled outbreaks. China is now struggling to contain an Omicron wave with lockdowns in its biggest cities. South Korea has offered to send unlimited aid to the North if requested, including vaccine doses, health workers, and medical equipment. On Saturday Mr Kim called the rapidly spreading Covid-19 outbreak a "great disaster". "The spread of the malignant epidemic is [the greatest] turmoil to fall on our country since the founding," the official KCNA news agency quoted him as saying. As well as the direct health impact, fears have been raised for food production in North Korea. It suffered a brutal famine during the 1990s, and today the World Food Programme estimates that 11 million of the country's 25 million people are undernourished. If agricultural workers are unable to tend the fields, analysts say, the implications are extremely serious.

North Korea orders strict lockdown with first official Covid cases

MAY 12: State media have reported an Omicron outbreak in the capital Pyongyang but did not state the number of cases. KCNA said it was "the biggest emergency incident" that breached the country's "quarantine front", and that leader Kim Jong-un was in emergency talks to prepare the nation's response. But observers believe the virus has long been present in the country. North Korea has not administered a Covid-19 vaccine programme to its population, having rejected offers made to it of both the Chinese-made Sinovac vaccine and AstraZeneca jabs. The nation had aimed to keep out the virus by keeping its borders closed since the start of the pandemic, leading to a dire economic situation and food shortages as the flow of essential supplies to the impoverished country was greatly reduced. There have been signs that the virus may have already made its way in. Since the start of the pandemic there have been several unconfirmed reports of Covid cases in the country. Neighbours China and South Korea have also both seen outbreaks, and China is currently struggling to contain Omicron waves. In June last year state media reported that Mr Kim had berated top officials over a "grave incident" related to Covid, but did not specify details. Later in September, the state held a military parade featuring lines of soldiers wearing hazmat suits and masks, which some analysts saw as a sign that a special force was created to help prevent the spread of Covid.
